I don't exactly use coco-coir the product I use is actually like 1"x1" pieces of coconut husks..I mix this with Hpoo as my spawn and the mycelium will eat right through the coconut..hopefully this gives you an idea..I've also found I get better yields with the coconut husk over coir...I believe because it has been less processed??..E

OK so like chip it up that sounds nice and easy for substrate but what about for use as a casing layer?

You don't need a casing layer for cubes if you spawn to coir, they fruit just great without one. And coir is no longer popular to use as a casing layer, peat and vermiculite have proven to be the best, coco coir is just too nutritious.

one nice. I use those 'mulch' blocks in the garden on occasion with compost might give that a try, so far I have mainly stuck to straw and manure or the small powdered blocks of coir...
Guess the fibrous structure would be a good thing as corn cobs seem to work ok.

Pasteurize It!! Sterilizing removes vital nutrients and like OP said forget a casing layer...not worth the hassle..if you are growing something besides Cubes..place some crumpled up wax paper over top of the colonized sub and remove when pins start..but I've never heard for the need for a casing layer with any of the different species?? ..E

Pan Cyans need a casing layer. Your best best is to find some Peatmoss and vermiculite. Also pasteurize your casing layers

Geez I think I made it pretty clear that peat moss is just plain not available, that would be why I am looking for a substitute, Peat moss when unavailable is not a good substitute for peat moss which I need because peat mioss is unavailable . THERE IS NO PEAT MOSS HERE!!!! jEr

LOL!! eh ya, can you get vermiculite? straight verm should be ok, although you will prob have to keep a closer eye on it's moisture content.
Edit:

No, it needs to be well composted etc.. More like soil.

I am looking for commercial production and an increasingly larger scale, would anyone dare try to re-use a casing layer? I guess you do nto need that much but it still runs rather exopensive to ship Peat moss here , jEr

I used the husk form the first time i did bulk and got some of my biggest shrooms ever that way. Turns out the largest ones were growing right off the chunks, could be that the chunks held more water
