I can't Wiki him, thereby learning about his human flaws and thus detracting from the original wisdom imparted by the quotation I may have read.
Is the poet and the poetry one entity, or is the poet simply an observer and scribe to the marvel he might experience?

Well, you can't really separate the experience from he who experiences it. They are fundamentally connected, in the sense that any experience requires the presence of an experiencer. And the nature of what is experienced is dependent on the nature of who is undergoing the experience.
Therefore I say they are one entity.

I like free markets and all. Truly I do, at least in general, but there needs to be some kind of oversight in recognition of sustainability. Life works the same way, on a bunch of sustainable systems. Why not honor what made us what we are and take some lessons? Nature FTW!

That said, is anonymous wisdom then at a disadvantage because it lacks a proper context and frame of reference? Do maxims need a speaker to be relevant or can they float around and be 'open'?
I suppose it depends on the quotation, but for me, hearing that Nietzsche went crazy and needed to be taken care of for the latter portion of his life had an impact on my feeling towards 'the abyss', for example.

At a disadvantage? Yes, and no. Yes in the sense that context can provide additional clarity as to what the speakers original meaning was. But no in the sense that that a free standing piece of wisdom can be utilized in more ways than one that is provided in context. Basically, I can take an anonymous piece of wisdom and derive my own meaning out of it, making it specifically tailored to my own personal philosophy.
However, I still believe that the truth (or lack of) in a person's words can always be taken without the knowledge of the speaker. Take for example, if Jeffrey Dahmer were to have said "Murder his wrong." the fact that he murdered over a dozen people doesn't make his statement incorrect. It does make HIM a hypocrite, but the truth of his words would stand alone.
Edit: Actually I want to amend what I said. I think an expert can offer validity to a statement, if the truth of the statement is in question. However, if the statement is merely a description of what anyone can see, it does not matter who the speaker is.

Poets fool themselves and think they are writing; and to be inspired is to fool yourself and think you are reading.
Some of the best poetry is washing dishes at the kitchen sink.
