Summer Festivals: Guide to Making Money
    #12372110 - 04/11/10 11:06 AM (13 years, 11 months ago)

Ok...

So well loving going to festivals, traveling, and having fun. But it can get quite costly...

How are you going to support your way?  We all know you can push, but the risks just aren't worth it anymore (for me)

Do you sell drinks? Clothes? Jewelry?

This summer i really want to sell my ceramics at festivals. Though fleemarkets, art shows, and fairs sound great too.

Tell me what you guys think.... Think people will buy them? What do you think i could get for them?

So whataya think? Will they sell? What would you pay?

Now it's your turn... what are YOU gunna do?~

They look pretty good. Rule of thumb for me though is to avoid brown tinted ceramics, the color scheme on those isn't may favorite. I would also suggest having more ceramics to sell because hippies aren't going to pay that much for anything.

you could probably trade them for drugs, or sell them for like 10-20$

like slashoz says most hippies:

a.) dont have money
b.) have lots of drugs

im gonna be selling hemp jewlery and tie dyes, hippies like them, but custies like that shit even more, some people pay 40$ per necklace, and I sell the shirts at like 15$

pushing drugs is probably (honestly) the quickest and easiest way to make money at a festival though. don't expect to be paying your way into concerts and shit JUST selling your ceramics, they are cool, but not sustainable.

also to put my theory into practice:

when i was in oakland, the group i was with was trying to hustle all sorts of shit....we had shirts/jewlery/artwork all sorts of shit, one of my friends was even trying to sell this weed he got at 25$ 1/8....we didnt sell ONE damn thing.

i had this knitted piece of artwork that I just walked through the crowd asking people "want to trade for doses" i ended up trading it for a half gram of molly. totally bomb deal considering it cost less than $1.00 to make and only to took maybe 30 minutes to construct. everyone said "id buy it if i had money" or "i dont even have a wall to hang it on"

those are really quite nice, i especially like the last two. i'd pay about 15 dollars, that's because i'm a broke ass. if i was a well off old woman i'd pay 100, but you're probably not gonna find a lot of those folk at your festies

Thanks clara... ha yea your probably right!

Im hoping fairs and  fleemarkets will bring in a bit more.

And to ANti... yeah the necklace thing is a really good idea... sell for alot and they are SO cheap to make..

OK... im going to give away a great idea i had!

So at my local mall there is a Kiosk selling glass pendants (mass made, but some are quite nice) They sell for 5-10 dollars each.. I was talking to the guy who ran the kiosk and he said he'd sell 100 of them for 300, though i could probably get them for 250. Then turn around and easily sell them for 10-20 all day. BINGO... easy easy money!

Im gonna be walking around with a gun case full of pendants at a few festivals. If I can find people to throw down on one Id like to get a table and vend much other stuff too.

I've got some glass pendants made by local blowers, some wire wrapped stone pendants I made myself and a few other odds and ends. If all else fails I usually do beer and food, as it is ALWAYS profitable.

nah i know.. its obviously WAY better to know someone who blows glass.. I don't. So it would be a good idea for me..

Or do you buy the pendants wholesale from glass blowing companies?

Make a high end website and sell that stuff on it.  That way you can target 'hippies' who go to work and have homes and like buying that stuff at ridiculous prices for retail 90$ - 550$...  Only way to make money.  Just sell 2-3 pcs/ weeks to make it worth while.

Festival Hippies don't buy stuff let alone pottery that they will want to carry with them all over the country.

Yah; ceramics like that you want to sell to 65 year old hippies with lucrative holistic healing business.

True.. Ideally this is what i'd like to do.. As well as possibly selling them in galleries..

But i've never sold a piece before.. so i figured festivals would be a great way to get my feet in the water.. let people get a feel for my work, find out what people are really liking etc..

I really want to have a cafe where i serves all food/coffees/teas out of my ceramics...

It's been one of my dreams to open up a teahouse where you can get 30 kinds of tea (in bulk too if you want) and then I'd hang my paintings up on the wall with big shiny pricetags on them.
I'd also display other artist's work as well.

Your ceramics would do great at a place like that I'd reckon.

Yeah i really want to do the same things... serve hq coffees/tees (a true rarity it seems) out of them and also sell them along with other local artists as well... I like your way of thinking

Im glad you think so.. thanks!  Also the painting sounds like a great idea too. I mean who wouldnt want to come to a sweet cafe with killer food/coffee/tea with a GREAT ATMOSPHERE.. It seems as if every city could really thrive off something like this.

GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT.......WHAT THEY NEED!    F big business, ie GENERIC!

Id love to have entheogenic teas too.
Of course there would be a disclaimer; but you could get Wild dagga, kava kava or kratom tea. Imagine that!

That would be really awesome...

It seems like it'd be legal, but something tells me there'd be complications...

But yea (like i mentioned in edited post above) give the people what they want, what they need. Serenity..

And nice relaxing cup of kava tea would do just that.. with the right food/atmosphere/music  people would't want to leave! Ha nah.. but they'd rave about it, and certainly frequent such place. I know I would

Theres a lot of places like that within my area. Tea/coffehouse shops that display local artists work on the walls. All of them are for sale and the businesses take 10 to 20% commission on the sales. They even have events about once a month where all the local businesses on the main drag display local art for sale and it helps everyone out, the artists and the businesses that host them. The last one I went to, had live bands in the trippy psychedelic room that was painted with all sorts of trippy stuff all over every inch of the ceiling and floor, amazing band and acoustics in the room. I think it's because we have art co-ops all around. Yet, somehow we lack any real hippy or drug scene. We also lack any real psychonauts period. HOW IS THIS? lol
