Adding a "mold inhibitor" to LC
    #12327379 - 04/04/10 02:37 AM (2 years, 1 month ago)

I was just thinking about something. Most mold inhibitors are meant to stop the spores from various molds from germinating. If I understand it correctly, a lot of them don't help against living fungus. So if you were to put niacin or something in a correct proportion in your LC, would it not stand to reason that clone tissue could survive in there, but contaminate spores would not?

thing is that an lc isn't really an established colony. it's pretty vulnerable.

For example you can put hydrogen peroxide on a solid chunk of mycelium with no ill effect. But if you put peroxide in an lc, it kills the whole thing.

Im not saying it wont work, but would take a lot of experimenting to find the exact right concentration.

Ultimately it would be less work to just follow sterile technique.

How about on substrates? What if I added a mold inhibitor to horse poo? I know that generally these substances don't kill living mycellium, but are they really bad for it? I'm guessing people have grown on things that have mold inhibitors in it, but I haven't found the info I am looking for yet.

Something you would add to the hpoo at the time of spawning?

Maybe. But I've never had much of a problem with trich on hpoo. It would take a lot of grows to collect enough data to show that the additive was reducing the contamn rate. Your technique would need to be perfect for the results to be meaningful. The paradox here, is that you won't get contamns if your technique is good.

I guess just for any medium, not just hpoo. Is there a "mold inhibitor" that would not kill living cubensis or hurt it much?'

the only thing i can think of is lime. people sometimes lime their straw when they having problems with trich.

Problem with lime is it slows down the growth rate considerably.

There's also a hoaxster from another site selling an additive he claims prevents trich. Beware such claims.
