Giant PF Cake Project (Part 2) (Finished!) * 2
    #12190130 - 03/12/10 12:13 PM (2 years, 2 months ago)

This is my second attempt at doing large PF cakes.

I used standard pf mix with a small amount of used coffee grounds added  (that morning's coffee) using sporeworks brand large spawn bags with silicone injection ports added (by me).

Used approximately 2 - 2.5 quarts per bags.  Cooked 90 mins @ 21 PSI.

Inoculated with APE LC.

Shaken on about day 7 or 8.  Took 5 days to fully colonize then let sit for 1 week.

I had intended on spawning to bulk but when I opened the bags they were all 3 pinning like crazy so I made a quick ghetto FC setup using a 20 gallon long-style aquarium on it's side.

I took a kitchen trashbag and cut the bottom off and filled it with wet vermiculite.  I placed each cake in and stuffed cake bits that stuck to the bag in between to connect them.

After that I stuffed extra wet vermiculite down the sides and around the back and sprinkled some over top to simulate rolling.

After about 24 hours in the FC, the 'bridges' I made have fuzzed over and now instead of 3 separate cakes I have 1 large one.  Not sure what effect that would though.

The idea with the wet verm is to allow the cakes to draw as much moisture as they want/need and provide a little extra humidity.

Using a 1.5 gallon coolmist for fae/humidity.  I just stuck it halfway in the aquarium and used a sheet of clear plastic cut into strips to hold it in.    I started out with 10 minutes on per hour but upped it to 20 minutes today.

It moves a good bit of air when it's running so I'm positive they're getting plenty of fresh air.  Not 100% sure on the humidity, as my hygrometer died recently.  I'll be misting 2-3x per day and keeping an eye on it to see how it goes.

Using a standard 75 watt daylight spectrum CFL on a 12/12 timer.

Temp stays around 75f.

I realized after doing these if I moved the injection port site up I could easily double the amount of PF mix I put in.  So I'll probably try that next.

Any recommendations on what sort of schedule to set the coolmist on?  This is the first time I've used one for a FC.

Very nice! I like it. Can't give you any advice though. I've never used a coolmist

Update:

Getting tons of side pins, so I upped the coolmist to a 30/30 cycle.  Seems to be working, starting to get top pins now. Misting 3-5x per day.

On the above picture, you can see where the two cakes joined together via the bridge of extra mycelium I had leftover plus some bruising from handling.

Looks good to me so far.  There's a few mutants if you look closely but surprisingly few compared to what I'm used to with regular PE.

By the way, started a new similar project in my journal:
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/12208895

3, 6 quart modified pf cakes.

Each one is about the same size as all 3 of these put together.

Decided to harvest a small amount so I choose the most developed cluster.  Weighed in at about 38 grams wet.  I'm expecting 4 - 4.5 grams dry.  Notice the cakes bruising due to getting wet then drying.  I've found this to be normal with PE.  If they're getting enough fresh air then bruising will occur and it will add up over time.
Noticed some new pins today, looks like the 2nd flush is getting ready to go already.

As per my normal procedure I slice the stems into potato chip size slices for drying and cut the caps into halves or quarters depending on how big they are.    Notice the thick solid stems. Within 30 seconds of slicing they bruise a dark blue.

Going to sample them tonight with some friends.  1.25 grams dry per person. Dried, ground and taken with orange pineapple juice :-D

The test went well.  Potency seems to be about the same as regular penis envy.  1.3 grams was plenty for a solid trip for everybody.

Went ahead and harvested everything.  Weighed in at 38 grams dry. Dunked the cakes overnight and got them back in the fc this morning.

The cakes have been back in the fc for about 4 days now. Keeping up on the misting and using the coolmist for fae and keeping the humidity up.

I use a modified pf mix.  Ground grains (brown rice, wbs, or rye) plus gypsum and coffee.  On one grow I used all 3 grains.  Once they were ground up I could not tell them apart.  Everything colonized at the same time so it's all the same to me.  WBS is the cheapest, easiest grain to get large quantities of for me.

Runs about 25-30 cents per lb in 40 lb bags.

I got tired of burning up coffee grinders, so I ordered a cast iron hand grinder.

Will be here Wednesday :-D
