Fruiting WBS jars directly to a terrarium?
    #12174752 - 03/09/10 10:22 PM (2 years, 2 months ago)

Hi, I am a casual experimenter in the mycological arts. I have had some success using wbs jars in the past, so I've decided to give it another go.

In my last experiment, I cased 4 pints with a 50/50, but nothing ever happened. It may have been due to drying out from being in a crappy martha chamber. It's construction left it not working correctly and me broke, so I was forced to manually mist the inside of the greenhouse 2-3 times a day to keep the RH above 80%...But this is all just back story.

My Question:

My friend uses wbs jars, let's them colonize (no shaking), then fruits the cakes directly into a terrarium on their lids like a PFtek cake. He's had success with this (trust me, I felt the success), and I'm inoculating my jars in the next couple days with the intention of trying it.

It seems however that no one here even considers this way an option for fruiting grain. I'm wondering, has anyone tried this? What are your thoughts? Possible Pro's and Con's to doing it this way?

Muchos Gracious and Happy Experimenting!

the reason we dont is because the grains thierselves will run out of food and water for the mycl. so you dont get as big or as much as you would if you spawned to a substrate.  you will get a poor flush and thats it by doing it his way.

way better off spawning the wbs to coir/verm/coffee then you get results like this:

err, yeah..*new post

Checked it out, great stuff, and damn near as simple (and cheap) as fruiting straight cakes. Lovely!

Thanks again!

your not shaking it and your fruiting it as a cake. why don't you just make a cake? BRF cakes are easy and you will be doing alot better then you are now. good luck
