Fasting
    #12169881 - 03/09/10 10:03 AM (2 years, 2 months ago)

Yesterday, pretty much by accident, I didn't eat from when I woke up at 10 until about 6:30.  During this time I was able to have a vigorous climbing session at my climbing gym and smoke weed as I hiked around hilly trails with my friends (though after smoking the weed I was pretty goddamn hungry)  In addition to all this, I felt great. So much energy and purpose, and I just felt like I had this "natural" quality to my experiences.  I'm gonna try to keep it going and eat less to break my considerable attachment to food (I'm lucky enough to have a fast metabolism so I'm not overweight but I still eat virtually uncontrollably sometimes).

All this has gotten me thinking that I want to experiment with fasting.  Has anybody done this, and if so just share your experiences cause I'm really interested right now.

I ended a one week fast just yesterday . i have fasted twice so far, both times lasted one week(7 days). i didn't abstain from food completely though, i ate fruits, vegetables, sometimes i would blend them and make juices. also i would drink plenty of water.

the first experience was amazing, my whole body felt refreshed. i felt very pure, mentally and physically. its almost as if you are awakened spiritually. at times i found myself praying and thanking life. everyday was a beautiful day, it felt almost like heaven. my meditation also improved drastically, not only that but my health was top notch. my weight was 160 when i started, afterward my weight dropped to 140, i had lost 20 pounds. which was probably all toxins anyway. i looked a bit skinny but i didn't care, i felt great! it took me a week to get my weight back, but it was all worth it.

I would recommend anyone to try it and see for themselves. its an experience you don't want to miss out on. everyone needs a wash every once in a while. its hard at first but in the end you become a much stronger person. you learn how to discipline your body/mind and you gain self control.

if i had the chance i would fast for a month, but i would move far away before i do that, cause friends and family just wouldn't understand.

it seems like the less i eat the better i feel

i haven't gotten too serious into dedicated fasting (beyond a few fruit fasts and one-day fasts) but i look forward to soon

i was reading a bit on fasting to death (santhara), it's done by jains commonly, seems like a nice way to go (when the time is right) :sun:

In Siddhartha at the end of the book I remember the old ferryman walking off into the woods to die, and I always wondered how that happened. Fasting to death makes the most sense to me now.  Assuming of course that he didn't simply leave his body.

The effects of fasting to me seem to help break down people's attachment to the flesh, like when the body isn't being fed the spirit gains nourishment. When I go a day without eating I notice it's easier to meditate and slip into a trance state and I also have more increased, vivid dream activity when I go to sleep. Not to mention fasting drastically increases the strength of entheogenic substances and lessens their onset time.

I've never gone on any hard-core fast (for longer than a couple of days as most) but when I've done it I feel lighter and when the end of the day comes I notice once I get past a certain point I don't feel as strong a need for food over the course of the day as I would have had I been eating.

I've been considering maybe doing a week-long fast before easing back into my regular spring detox diet for a couple of weeks to see if I feel better then I usually do after a detox.

You should read 'The Tao of Detox' by Daniel Reid, its awesome. http://www.detoxifynow.com/tao_of_detox_excerpt.html
Fasting solely on water is super good for you. The digestive enzymes in your stomach are freed up to enter your bloodstream and pullout toxins from all over the body.

If you truly want to benefit from fasting in the long run... you must completely shift your eating habits to whole natural foods... nothing denatured...

Do a 3 day water fast... break it lightly with mono meals of fruits... fruits are the easiest foods humans can digest... they are the most pure fuel source... we were designed to eat them... and only them with addition of leafy greens, various raw nuts and seeds to supplement our minerals, proteins and fats.

I have done a week long water fast, the longest ive gone... I broke it with fresh pineapple juice from my juicer and I felt ecstatic the rest of the day... literally better than any drug high ive experienced... even 150mg of MDMA....

You can carry this state past the fast if you break it gently with mono meals of fruits for the next week, then begin eating light nuts, seeds and some salads...

Contrary to belief, fasts also help you build muscle really fast in the long run. Pretend like you are breaking down part of some old structuring to a building, and adding new everything... muscle is like this...

I suggest just googling fasting, its the most amazing healing mechanism our body has... dont ever believe you were withering away while fasting... its not like that at all.

Thanks a lot for the suggestion. I'll check that book out when I can.

I do eat pretty healthy for the most part but I'm into fitness and bodybuilding so I take a lot of processed supplements and vitamin pills (not the 'roids though! Would never go near that shit) and eat a lot of meat. I know that a diet isn't a quick fix but a lifestyle. I usually do a couple weeks long detox (no meat, dairy, wheat, gluten or anything processed, with herbs like burdock, dandelion, and milk thistle with lots of garlic and onions) in the spring to jump start cutting down for summer and for some internal spring cleaning. I've never started it up with a fast but like I said I've been considering trying it for a while and I think I might do it this year.

Thanks for your advice.

I understand that fasting can have spiritual benefits but it just seems intuitive to me that depriving your body of food for long periods of time has to be unhealthy somehow.  :confused2:

Fasting or heroin?  If I did heroin I would experience a great afterglow the day after.
