 Punishment for getting more money in your tax refund?

I got around 3000 from federal, and was supposed to get 1000 from state but it got held for manual review. now they want my w2s so i know they know somethings up. this isn't a lot of money for a tax fraud case, what kind of penalties would you expect?

Maybe it's just a random formality. To my [limited] tax knowledge most people either break even on state, owe state, or only really get a couple hundred.

No. I did this on purpose and they are on to me its only a matter of time Im wondering what the punishment would be i have no record

They will probably ask for repayment plus interest. When I got caught scamming unemployment they asked for everything they deemed I didn't deserve (which was more than I had actually scammed) and then they added on 30% more as a penalty. It will probably go down like that.
You really can't beat the IRS at their own game...
