N00b questions, casing & bulk tub
    #12090317 - 02/24/10 04:11 PM (2 years, 2 months ago)

Hello shroomery! I've read the site on and off for a while but never quite got around to joining until now.

Anyway, a close friend is working on his first cultivation effort and has a few questions...it would be a great help if I could detail his situation and plans and receive feedback from those of you that are more in the know. The goal here is to clear up as much confusion and rookie mistakes as possible. I'm sure these questions have been asked a thousand times before but if you could point out the right direction I know he'll appreciate it.

Five cups of rye grain was poured into a filter patch spawn bag with 5 cups of water and a pinch of gypsum pellets. The bag was then heat sealed and pressure cooked for 1 hour at 15 psi (I've heard that's not long enough)? After cooling, the bag was inoculated with 6cc of Cambodian spores by direct injection through the filter patch (oops, at least he wiped it with alcohol first) and the hole covered with a small piece of tape.

The bag was then placed in an incubator at 82 degrees F. A few days later, small clumps of mycelium began appearing in the grain, and this was massaged into the mix to expose uncolonized grain. At the present the bag is being left in the incubator to fully colonize.

When the bag is fully colonized he plans to introduce it to a clean bulk tub (storage bin with holes drilled in the sides and lid). The bottom of the tub would contain a peroxide and water mix (~1:10), followed by a half inch of perlite, an inch layer of colonized grain (smoothed out with an alcohol-wiped spoon) and a half inch layer of vermiculite on top (also smoothed out with a sterile spoon).

But how does one tell the right time to move the grain from bag to tub? Are there good things to keep in mind when doing it? Does the mix inside the tub need to be sterilized? He's thinking gloves and a mask and lots of lysol should be used to keep things clean in the process.

After everything is layered inside the tub, he plans to place the lid on top and gently fan the inside using an air pump, lightly misting with a peroxide/water mix every few hours. Then just wait for fruiting.

Does anyone have feedback/cautions/suggestions/don'tfuckingdothat's?

Thanks in advance,

-NA

Wayy too complicated haha.
You don't spawn to perlite, use some coir/verm pasteurized to field capacity.
Do a search for ohmatic monotub

Few things...

1. Don't worry about the incubator. Room temperature for spawn is fine. If the temperature is comfortable enough for you in your household, your spawn doesn't mind. The colonizing mycelium produces its own heat as well, so your 82F might be a tad overkill. You don't want to start flirting with bacteria.

2. Did you cover the injection hole with micropore tape? You want Gas Exchange to occur, or else your mycelium will suffocate . Micropore tape and the like will allow it to breathe, but still filter out contaminants.

3. What linkin said.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the help.

EDIT: My friend doesn't have micro pore tape, but the tape is only obstructing a tiny portion of the filter patch.

Any other ideas?
