Looking for a few good books to read
    #12048343 - 02/17/10 03:16 PM (2 years, 3 months ago)

I'm a fan of Kurt Vonnegut, Philip K. Dick, Aldous Huxley (I haven't read much of his work, but Brave New World is a classic that I can reread and enjoy every time) and Chuck Palahniuk.

There's a certain strange style these authors seem to share, they all design stories packed with irony and wit that are very close to the world we know, but usually set in a twisted and amplified version of it. Demonstrating morals and lessons with these extremes as tools.

That's exactly what I'd like to see more of, but I've pretty much burned through what seems to me the best works of these authors (with the exception of Aldous, who I would like to read more works of, but haven't really seen one that strikes me as equal to or better than Brave New World, and once I've read one authors "finest" (IMHO), I seem to lose interest in their other works that don't live up to the other material.

Well, I went to Gnod.net and it suggested Feodor Dostoyevsky, and Notes From The Underground seems like a good read. My library system only carries cliff notes and study guides for Dostroyevsky...

"Sophie's World" by Gaardner is an awesome book. It teaches you about the history of philosophy while painting a great tripping story for you to fall into it. One of the coolest books I've ever read.

I think you will definitely dig Notes From the Underground.

I just finished Journey to the End of the Night by Celine, and I think you'll enjoy that as well; just read a synopsis.

You'll probably love anything Tom Robbins. I was into basically same authors as you, started reading Vonnegut and loved it then Palahniuk. Acutally, it's kind of odd, as those are all the authors I first started reading when I really got into reading.

Tom Robbins is the shit. Check him out for sure. And read both of Tony Vigorito's books,Just a Couple of Days and Nine Kinds of Naked. After that, try and tackle the illuminatus trilogy.
