www.freecycle.org

Dont know how many of you know about this site or not.

But, you type in your city and state, and it will direct you to a local group that has stuff they want to give away for free, or you can also post your crap that other people might want for free.

The people that run the Austin freecycle are a bunch of douches. When you apply they tell you that you have to live within austin city limits or else you need to join another group. I live like 4 miles at most outside of the city limits but I do everything in austin, and there's no closer freecycle group, but when I applied they just linked me to the group list to find a closer one and denied application. I had to apply again saying I did live in the city limits.

Now reading the rules and any announcements by moderators you can tell they're all assholes.

I don't know about that, it is great for getting rid of useful stuff you would otherwise have to throw away(old furniture, odds and ends from cleaning out closets, etc).

Not so good for acquiring items though, if you want it chances are 30 people already messaged about it.

I agree. Freecycle is good for getting rid of your old stuff, but hard to beat everyone else to the good stuff thats posted.

Yeah, I can be a little bit of a packrat so if I know someone will get some use out of my items, it is easier to clean house. There must be people that have new freecycle posts emailed to their cell phone so they can scoop up the good shit quick. I haven't had any luck.

It couldn't have been easier for me to join. I think the mods in your area are just strict or something.

Only time we ever used freecycle we got hooked up with this amazing lady who brought stuff for us every day.  She was moving out and had so many useful items to kick down.
