Suitable filter breathers
    #11954108 - 02/03/10 02:38 PM (3 years, 3 months ago)

Would using a breathable band-aid or a cotton ball be a suitable filter breather for a 1 qt rye seed jar? Hole is same size as it would be for tyvek or a synthetic filter disc.

no. neither of those will work for you. If you want an easy filter, get micropore tape. Tyvek is my fav though.

I have struck out on finding tyvek at local hardware stores, any suggestions for where to find polyfill or other tyvek ideas?

Also, why will cotton balls/band-aids not work?

Band-aids don't provide enough air exchange and are likely made of cotton, which is an organic material and a great food source for contaminants that can use it to get into your jars.

Most home improvement stores should carry tyvek overalls in the painting department. You can also use tyvek envelopes that are free at all post offices, but this tyvek is thinner than the one found in overalls.

Polyfill can be found at any craft store as stuffing for pillows or homemade stuffed toys.

Molds will eat cotton. try a pillow or a stuffed toy for polyfill

edit: wygram beat me to it :p

You can find tyvek at ANY post office (in the U.S.).....free envelopes. Ive taken 200 at one time...i havent paid for a filter in forever...

The last 2 months ive had 100 quart WBS jars fully colonized with 0% contamination all using the post office free tyvek envelopes. they are absolutely wonderfull. If you have to inoculate with a syringe, just cover the hole with micropore tape and you will be fine...granted your space is relatively clean.
