WHAT HAPPENS TO A PEYOTE WHEN (Pics Added)
    #11922183 - 01/29/10 03:00 AM (14 years, 2 months ago)

Okay, I am new to cacti growing .. but not very new. I have read around Allot! And have performed several successful graft etc.

I have a few questions though!

What happens to a Really old peyote? I have seen Very old peyote on the web and on here -  great big spirally fluffy things!
But I have Never seen them grow past a certain size.
Is this because they eventually Die of old age?? :O And does grafting speed up this process (shorten their lifespan)?

Also a more practical question:
I know that stopping a columnar cacti from having winter dormancy causes ugly
elongated growth. But does this matter if they have a Peyote grafted ontop? Will elongation be visible on a peyote?

Also here are a few pics of my few grafts:

Got allot of plans for future grafts!

for a plant to be soo prehistoric i dont think they die of old age. There are still trees on the planet that date back to about 15000 years old in the mountains of italy. so as for plants dieing of old age it might be highly unlikely.

No, there aren't. Not alive, in any case.

It's a fact Jesus walked the earth?

The oldest Italian tree looks to be approx 3000 years old.

I think some of the redwoods date back up to 5000 years, but I think we shall have to agree to disagree on if Jesus was around for real!

He is not the messiah, he is a very naughty sun god!

Lets not get into religious discussion mates.

Keep it to Spirituality & Mysticism

On that note, also check out some of the Dracaena draco in the Canary Islands.

Ancient and very impressive as well.

Answers to your questions:

1. Peyote does only tend to grow to a certain size in the wild before it starts sending out offsets in order to keep growing and keep expanding.

I have, however, never seen an analysis or samples taken on their age.

2. Lophophora, although a bit less susceptible, can etiolate too.

Grafting shouldn't eliminate that, might mask it though.

there are for sure trees on this planet that date back to 15000 years ago that are still alive to this day. Its in the evergreen family.glaciers were only found in certain areas so other places in the world were never tilled by glacial mass

Got any further info or links on the 15000 year old trees? The oldest I've found so far is 8500 years old on the Sweden/Norway border.

they tend to offset when they get larger, 20cm is absolutely a monster and i doubt if many people even see 15cm in their life.  those are single stems measurements, groups can easily become larger.

nope, see above.

yes

i dont think anyone really knows this answer, but it doesnt seem to.

nope.  lack of light causes this.

peyote dont often etiolate, because they are such slower growers they would need a long period of shitty light, which can happen...and has many times.  grafting speeds up growth, which means it will also elongate in a shorter period of time than an ungrafted plant....so yes, but just give them light and your cool.

great looking plants by the way, looks like your doing a nice job!

Its really amazing to think that all of my peyotes will outlive me. (unless I eat them when I'm an old git). :P

I've know that there are some RIDICULOUSLY old trees out there
As always wiki has a few answers:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oldest_tree

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pando_(Quaking_Aspen)

Thanks for all of the replies ... even if most of them were about jesus.

have you ever let that plant live outside in the sun and heat? looks kinda indoorish. Cactus dont generally die from old age, they grow massive . I live in the desert and I cant wait till summer so I can put my peyote out side where they will stay till I die.

=D
