ITT: We rant about common errors in the English language.

For any other language Nazis here, post about any common errors you hear/read day to day. I'll start:
When people say "could care less", when they mean "couldn't care less". I think it might be an American phrase, because I've only ever heard it from my American friend and on the internet. Either way, I don't see how this came around... it doesn't even make any sense! You use it to express indifference, yet saying you could care less implies that it bothers you in some way because it is possible that you could feel less strongly on the subject. Simply enough, saying you "couldn't care less" shows the intended apathy; there is simply no way that you could care any less.
I choose that one because I just read someone say it on another topic. I have a whole host more to complain about, though. Your turn!

Even now, if I see in my soul the citron-breasted fair one
Still gold-tinted, her face like our night stars,
Drawing unto her; her body beaten about the flame,
Wounded by the flaring spear of love,
My first of all by reason of her fresh years,
Then is my heart buried alive in snow.
The universe is transformation: life is opinion.

It's "definitely". This was actually a common error I was going to mention.

Not sure if that's sarcasm or not, but if it is, then I have enough complaints to make this thread go far enough, even if not another person participates.
For example, "a lot" and "more so" are always two words, contrary to what some people think.
And, this one's a bit dated, but "partake" should actually mean eat/drink. You can partake of a meal, but technically you cannot partake of a game of football. I reckon this nuance is one that is soon going to be lost in our language, though. Everyone assumes it means "take part".
Anyway, I'll let some other people talk before I post any more - the difference between "anymore" and "any more", there's another one.
And yeah, gotta agree on the first two Dystopia (what's even worse is people who use "whom" when it's incorrect; I don't mind people using "who" even though it's an object because "whom" now is perceived as very formal, but you just seem pretentious and ignorant if you attempt to use "whom" and fail).
I admit I am guilty of using "they" when the gender is unspecified though, as I just find "he/she" to be too stilted.

Is there anything worse than ghetto talk in print? I think you need a P.H.D. in gangology to understand some of it. I'm far from a prude but if you need to curse 4 or 5 times in 1 paragraph without good reason, you just might be a little ignorant. I could go on forever. I think I'll have a lil toke instead.

I'm on your side. It's hard to take a person seriously when they clearly don't know the difference between weather and whether. To, too and two. Their, there and they're.
Two that bug me here in the N.E. are "so didn't I" and "it weren't me".
There are too many to mention but they who do these things should be beaten without mercy.

Welfare states on both sides of the Atlantic have discovered that largesse to losers does not reduce their hostility to society, but only increases it. Far from producing gratitude, generosity is seen as an admission of guilt, and the reparations as inadequate compensation for injustices – leading to worsening behavior by the recipients.

Misusing comparatives sometimes annoys me. "more stronger", for example; it's either more strong or stronger! Generally the latter.

How does "I could care less" work?
EDIT:
Quote:

Hmm, never heard that myself. I know Britons tend to say "turn off the lights", whilst I think Americans say "turn out the lights"? Correct me if I'm wrong on that one.
I don't really deem either more correct than the other, though.

I wonder that also. I brought this very thing up to a friend of mine a long time ago.. he was convinced "I could care less" was the right way to say it. "I could care less, but I won't" maybe? I dunno.

I don't see how it is, though. Well, it's not that it's improper English, I just don't understand how it shows indifference at all. It shows the opposite to me...
