first time making liquid culture

I've made my first liquid culture, and as far as I can tell all is well. Where, however, should I store it? I've come across all sorts of advice - some say the culture is useless after two weeks, some say store what you don't use in the fridge, some say tape over the hole and store in a dark warm place...any solid info out there? thanks, jash

check it out listen well. this is what you should do to store it.FIRST you must let the culture grow in a dark place that is warm, this is were an incubator comes in handy, if you dont know what that is than look it up it is really handy if you live in place were tempature are very unpredictable or really cold. but hey i live in 70-90 degree weather all the time and i still have one.you can get away with just wraping them in a towel and putting them next your computer monitor, making sure you dont over heat em up so adjust the distance from the monitor cus those things get hot when you keep em on. id say the best temp would be lik 82 degrees f.SECOND after it has grown and you will know if it has or not, which usually takes 11-17 days in my experiance, you should then refridgerate it to store it.aned u could probably use it for 2 months if it is kept refridgerated. good luck

Thanks SF:
Like I said in my post, the LC has succesfully grown - I kept it in an incubator at about 83 F, and within 24 hours there was visible growth! It's been in the incubator now for about a week - I'm gonna keep it in there four more days or so...then...
I'll take your advice and put it in the fridge - but should I put a piece of tape over the one hole in the jar to ward off contams, or is the fridge itself enough of a barrier?
best, jash

i've used two month old cultures that were kept at room temp the whole time with success.
i have 6 month old cultures that still work as well as the the day they finished colonization that were kept under refrigeration since they did finish colonization.
refrigerating a culture slows its metabolic activity to a standstill, basically preserving its vitality indefinitely. usually a culture becomes contaminated before it naturally expires. if you're careful and clean with them they should last quite some time under refrigeration or even not.
regardless i wouldn't leave it in a warm place specifically, warmer temperatures speed up their degredation. cold is best, but (should be obvious) above freezing.

tape if you want, i mean if it lets you sleep better i compleatly understand, this hobby can get a lil stressful.if its in the fridge than its safe unless there already is some kind of bacteria in there.bacteria in the fridge will live if it is already there but its metabolic activity will be stalled just like the mycelliums.so keep that in mind. hope everything works out. liquid cultures are the shit man everyone should have one.goood luck
