Sometimes this is a sign of sickness. I was reading the Monks of Newskeet (sp) and they mentioned that when a dog eats dog poo, it can mean they are sick.
Now cat poo on the other hand, my dogs chow down on that shit, its ridiculous, but the vet said its alright. She said that cats digest their food so quick that many of the nutrients are still present in the poo, and although it is gross for us humans to comprehend, there is really nothing unhealthy about your dog eating cat shit.

Joe, were those chocolate labs? I heard chocolate labs and german shepherds do that. I find it pretty gross, it almost makes me cringe to think about it.

the dog i had 6 years ago(she is dead now  ) used to eat her shit for a few weeks. the doctor saidf that she needed more nutrients or something and he told me to let her eating them.

I work in an animal resue center,
we obviously get that kind of shit all the time!
apparently somthing to do with nutrients (ask the vets)
however one of the best way to stop it is to mix in a few pinapple chunks with their food, after pinnapple has been digested it tastes like shit (well worse)...apparently
most dogs cant stand the taste & will stop eating their own shit, dont know if it stops them eating other dogs' shit tho
