We live one life then are born into another.

This is based off of some belief that when you die you are born again into another person. You will not remember your life before and might be a different gender or race even specie. Where is this belief from and does it sound likely at all? O and if someone was born not knowing of there other life then how would they be the same being would the same perception come over to the new life.
-------------------- I've met God across his long walnut desk with his diplomas hanging on the wall behind him, and God asks me, "Why?" Why did I cause so much pain? Didn't I realize that each of us is a sacred, unique snowflake of special unique specialness? Can't I see how we're all manifestations of love? I look at God behind his desk, taking notes on a pad, but God's got this all wrong. We are not special. We are not crap or trash, either. We just are. We just are, and what happens just happens. And God says, "No, that's not right." Yeah. Well. Whatever. You can't teach God anything.

Isn't that reincarnation? I can't understand how it would work, wouldn't your old self have to cease to exist? Like living in a void

No because matter is never destroyed so some of you traits would pass over.

I think people are hampered by the limited view that our reality offers when we try and think of questions such as these.
The common perception is of some ethereal spirit that inhabits your body until the body dies, at which point it transfers over to another organism.
My view is somewhat different. Your "soul" is the entirety of everything you experience on this plane, including "external" physical reality. I'll use a computer analogy. You can run a virtual program on your computer, at it can have a character/avatar as a focal point in which you view and interact with a 3d plane. However, the character does not exist separately from the rest of the program; it is only an illusion that allows for that type of experience.
Having a physical life is analogous to the above. Everything you experience is, in a way, part of you. And when you die you "close the program," so to speak, and go back to a higher plane, from where (if you are aware enough) you can generate new experiences, such as another physical life.
Your personality is a construct specifically tailored to this plane, but when you die you will retain the memory of this experience, and it will be added to the the overall knowledge of the soul.

I believe "Reincarnation" happens, but is very misunderstood.

i believe that your spirit/energy as a whole contained within a vessel is shattered into its simplest form which is not understood by our gauges and formulas, its not even a considered medium yet! this form of energy distributes itself and finds compatable pairs until it forms a unique mass in the embrio in a different medium, not the physical. this is why i believe people have past life experiences, because the eneregy sometimes clumps under some kind of meta stress and retains memories in fractures. many traits can retain and pass and this can support why we have prodigies at ages younger than 10. remember energy cannot be created or destroyed, but it can be reconfigured and manipulated. im nuts! i know.
