Growing poppies indoors

Sorry if there's been threads on this already, too lazy to search right now.
Would it be possible to grow poppies indoors? If so, would some sort of elaborate set up be needed, or could you just sow seeds and give the light every now and then? Has anyone done this before? Was it difficult, and do you have any tips that would increase one's chances of making this possible?

Yea, I just searched. Seems to be a bad idea. Ok, changing the general question of this thread. When would be the best time to sow seeds for next years outdoor patch? Would now be a good time, or should I wait until the winter is over?

I've grown poppies indoors. You can grow them just fine, but they really suffer without an hps (or equivalent) and lots of horizontal room for their roots. The big thing though is poppies are in a gray area legally. It'd be quite hard to convince anyone indoor poppies are for beauty / decoration

Yes poppies indoors is not a very worthwhile endeavor especially when you have access to somewhere outdoors. Lots of money, energy, soil, and nutrients wasted as opposed to outdoors where they are very easy to grow. If you grow indoors they will eventually want a lot of rootspace and headroom. I grew a single poppy indoors when I first got an HPS but it was just for fun to see how it would go. Here's a link to my grow log from back then: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/7989783#7989783

One more question. Is it possible to have poppies this spring? If so, what would I do to make this happen? In my experience, it takes at minimum 3 months for them to mature. This thread is what got me wondering:

True, I was just wondering if there was anything done different that makes them appear earlier. Starting after last frost is is!

All the poppies I tried growing indoors, failed. I think due to lighting conditions more then anything. id wait till it gets all warm and fuzzy outside and grow a nice garden fer yourself

I've heard of people starting before the frost as well.
If you want, try starting some earlier than last frost and see how your results are.
Poppy seeds are easy enough to get, why not experiment!

Yea, I gave them a go this year, but didn't get to starting them until late in the season, like august. Some of them did blossom, but the pods were no bigger than a dime and the bigger ones never got around to it, and a light snow we had killed them off. I'll do some experiments though next spring.

Yes, they love the cold... I have heard that there is a VERY small window here in California to even grow them at all. It is said to even start them during the winter here because it's the only time that it's actually cold enough for them to grow. They hate extreme heat.

Poppies will sprout when the temperatures are around 18C(64F). It is best to sow them after the last frosts or if you are in a mild climate without frost you can sow in Autumn(Fall).

germinating and growing them out for a month or two indoors is a good idea. Growing them indoors is a waste of time. They need sun and heat to get nice and strong. Have you ever seen how big the leaves on poppies can get? That means alot of light for a few pods, or alot of small ones. Dont be scared to grow outdoors, just dont cut them if people can see them.

If you live in a temperate climate they are like weeds. I just throw the seeds out in any garden bed during the winter and by spring they are already growing. They dont need much, just some watering when they are young.
