Adding to the debate bullpen idea
    #11624953 - 12/10/09 04:20 PM (2 years, 5 months ago)

I like the bullpen idea, what about adding these features:

Lets make a debate contest. This can be separate from the bullpen thread. The OP puts something like [debate] in the post title. Someone else agrees to debate the topic, and there is a time limit set, like a half hour. The person who started the thread makes an opening statement, followed by the responder who makes an opening statement. Then the clock is started and the two debate back and forth for the allotted time. At the end of the time, the two can make closing statements summing up their arguments. After this, a poll is added to the first post. The poll has two questions: 1. Was your original opinion in agreement with the OP or the responder? 2. Is your current opinion in agreement with the OP or the responder? The winner will be the one who changes the most opinions. The poll is tallied at a determined time after the debate (1 day?)

I think this has a couple of advantages:

1. You can start a new debate at anytime without having to wait for a spot in the bullpen to clear up.

2. There is a winner! This makes it fun and exciting, even daring!

I see you're all afraid of my overpowering intellect.

Don't worry, I'm not going to totally destroy you.

I don't think any moderator is up to keep time on this in any event. The clocks would have to be set by those debating.

It's going to be difficult to find someone who will answer to the OP at the same time you're online, then to continue debating, answering within half hour intervals...

I think it's too messy though and probably won't working considering how the Bullpen is now...

Taking your idea further: how about a poll at the end of very post. Like or dislike. Then you can see the masses booing or cheering for you and it makes for a more entertaining, Colosseum-like experience.

Scary :whoa: Considering how hard it is for anyone here to ever admit they're wrong about any little thing I doubt many would chance losing in a forum battle. It was dead before it began IMO. Mostly we just want to fuck around and play in a safe, controlled, warm and fuzzy atmosphere.:grin:

I prefer the regular threads. I didn't think the Bullpen discussions turned out better than any engaged debates that I occasionally stumble upon in the forum.

True that. Bullpens happen anyway.

One of my favorite things about you Grapefruit is how honest you are about many uncomfortable feelings. It's a good quality and rare.
