Question about steam sterilizing grain...

Hey folks,

It has been a while since I have been consistently lingering about the boards, but I had a question. I completed my first grow a few months ago. I ended up with about 6 oz. cracker dry between two flushes.

Anyways, I used rye as my spawn for my monotub. I used a simple large sea food pot to steam sterilize the rye. I did soak it for about 24 hours, and simmered it for 45 minutes prior to steam sterilizing it. I simmered it long enough so that the first few rye kernels popped.

How come I was able to complete avoid contaminants without using a pressure cooker? I have read over and over that you must pressure cook grains, but I managed to be quite successful without it. Was it just luck or can it be done without it?

but if you can consistantly do it with out contams then go for it but your first contam will haunt you for awhile when and if you do. :sun:

I will probably just get a PC then. I would rather not deal with contaminants.

I did manage to get 4 of 4 jars completely colonized without contaminants. Strange. I did use organic rye purchased from a health foods store. I don't know if that makes a difference or not.

probably alot cleaner than feed stores product since it is eatin by people. :shrug:

Also, once you get some contams you have a higher contam spore load in your place. So your luck will get worse over time.

^^^ What they said! Once your spore load gets high you can spend what seems like forever fighting it off of future grows. And that sucks. It really, really sucks.
So be careful and get rid of anything that gets the green before it turns green if you can.

I have become particularly interested in Psilocybe mexicana. Does rye grass seed need to be PCed like rye grain? Or can it be steam sterilized?
