Dormancy of Cacti and Succulents-long question.

I recently put up some cacti for winter dormancy, this is my first time putting them up this way, I usually leave them under some indoor lights during the colder months and do not let them go dormant.
But anyways I no longer want to trick mother nature , im sick of cutting off the smaller indoor pups and rooting them, im running out of space! When the cacti go dormant outside should they get some light, not to much so that they dont get etiolated, but just a little each day?
Ive read this is good to do from some members on here as well as other sources, ive also read no light the whole winter season is the best way, I cant imagine that being the correct way because cacti need to light make food
I have some shade 80% shade cloth I could use for them with a homemade lean to PVC setup I made, I live in the southeast so the cold is not that much of a problem here, it gets down to 15-17 sometimes but that is rare and not for long.
Also as far as succulents go, do those need to be watered as usual or do they go dormant to? I had some kalanchoe that were not watered all year and are still doing fine, they are in large containers so I was surprised they had not died.
I have a bunch of Aloe, that is why I ask. Ive read you can keep Aloe dormant, but have only seen bad results from this, I think I have the cacti thing down, but no so much on the succulents.
Thanks.

You're gonna need a better insulator than shade netting.
I usually run posts, plastic sheeting, and christmas lights as a heat source. you're shooting for temps in the 30s and generally dry roots.

My brother has a fairly large greenhouse he is going to let me use to help keep my babies warm, its heated!
I know that the roots need to be kept warm and not damp so that they dont freeze then rot.
But anyways any responses on the succulents, or the amount of light the cacti/succulents need during dormancy?
Thank you.
