Blue-Oyster Basket Grow Chronicle 1

I started off with some spores thanks to Ahimsa I made a syringe from almost half of one of the prints and inoculated 4 WBS Jars on October 1st T'was about 2 cc's per jar.
No signs of growth on October 4th...so I decided to put some quart jars of warm water in with the Oyster Jars to up the surrounding temperature a little. The NEXT day (October 5th)...signs of growth!
This picture was taken October 8th

And this one on the 10th

10 days after I inoculated I had 2 complete jars and the other two soon followed. (I did grain to grain and made about 9 more from 1 jar )
Next I took hand chopped straw (kung fu style...using scissors) and soaked it with dishwashing/hand soap for 2 hrs. Then I pasteurized it on my stove in two different BIG pots. Boy was that messier than I'd hoped. But I did a pretty good clean-up job!
On the 19th I took ONE jar of WBS spawn and layered it between the straw in a laundry basket.
I then put a rock on top of a 5 gallon bucket lid that was on top of the straw in the basket. This helps the straw form more of compressed block when colonizing. If I remember correctly it took about 12 days for the bag to look like this...
 and this

I've had the basket on my back porch for a while now (since Halloween). It rains every now and then around here, but not as much as I'd hope. However, I found an AWESOME pack of oysters growing on my friend's Norwegian Maple stump in his yard...so TIS THE SEASON
The basket went through some dry days, but I watered it in the middle on the top by pouring water. And I misted it the basket whenever I felt like I should. Ya just feel it ya know?
So 10 days in I realized some of the mycelium that was easily visible on the outside had begun to fade. I was losing my patience, but told myself patience is a MUST in this hobby! I couldn't have been more right...
5 or 6 days ago I thought to lift my basket up and sure enough pins were stickin out of the draining holes...This told me that the basket wanted MORE moisture...more water!!!
And then 2 days ago we had a BIG down pour! Mushrooms really can't be overwatered! Check it!
 blue oysters
 Blue Oysters!
 BLUE OYSTERS!
I'm excited they're coming along well. I wonder how big they'll grow? Some of them seem to be coming along...but deeper inside the hay than I thought. I would think that a higher humidity surrounding the immediate exterior of the basket would be a beneficial manipulation to the environment of the Oyster Basket. Would you agree? I want to put something over the basket to prevent from the early morning 3 hrs of sun. Rain on Sunday... yayah!

I'm wondering if less fluctuations would help size, but I think they still got a little while. I thought I heard that good FAE is directly related to size. looks like you had success with a cooler. I like it. How'd ya get FAE?

oh no i did not grow in it"cooler" i packed it to take around to try to sell
fae on high rh at 86% temp at 73 deg f
i am going to do a basket on my next run
and start looking for a set i can stack
now that i have the space and i hope to get control of the temp situation i have going on.
a big area is harder to control than a 4 tier.
and check the link in sig it is the best way i have found to control rh and temp.
hope this helps

i'm fruiting outsides right now. I don't get how one could automate great humidity and get good FAE when that automated device in the link unless one also used an automated FAE device...

no problem with fae................keep it constant --like outdoors--
low flow due to negative pressure---exhaust fan. low flow!! constant ... slow enough for the equipment to compensate for the rh diff and temp.
they are thermostats sensitive to 1 deg F so if the influx of air is constant and low flow then it is automatic.i have found that in a small environment flow can be increased with no impact on the function of the equipment ...............
it just turns on more often. and that is the factor to watch. if it shuts off the humidifiers for a long time increase the flow and the humidifier will come on more often...........not like a cycle timer in that it comes on based on time but it comes on when its needed .....youset the temp and the rh and it maintains it. real precise.
