why do people feel the need to bulk up their muscles?
being fit and having a nice body is nice but i don't get why more is needed.
i guess maybe for rock climbing...
but that is besides the point.
(i know this doesn't have much to do with the OP but i am curious)

DarkMoon21 made alot of great points.

For me, i like challenging myself and pride myself on my ability to carry heavier loads, run/ride up big hills, and put aside the pain + failure factor that most people let limit themselves during physical pursuits.

Healthy body and healthy mind are key to spiritual balance IMO.

For me, i have constantly had issues with injuring joints (shoulders, elbows, wrists, ankles, and knees.) So currently i am "building" functional strength to avoid future injuries doing what i do.

Being able to turn a tire iron, pick up a fallen over motorcycle, smash an anvil, climb a mountain, swim, run, through hike, etc. all require strength.

I dont want balloon muscles but prefer dense, slim but toned - that's what i am aiming for...

Ultimately seeing results and knowing your are physically capable of "more than the next guy" is a major self confidence boost. After this happens, one ends up doubting themselves less and this has a spin-off effect on becoming more successful in all ones pursuits.

IMO.

Soy increases estrogen levels in men. However, its really not a concern unless you are eating tofu several times a week and drinking soymilk, etc.

There's a lot of conflicting ideas but some say it messes w/ a male's testosterone.

I feel that a man would have to drink, or eat, a lot of soy to get any negative effects. I eat soy icecream once a wk or so.

edit: damn PDU, i gotta type faster

If it weren't for the bloody corpses, I wouldn't have any corpses at all.

There are two ways to get to the top of an oak tree: start climbing or sit on an acorn.

Are you a carrot, an egg, or a coffee bean?

Alright, for olympic lifts, most important thing, like squats, is to keep your back strong and chest wide. Start from a JUMP stance, rather than an athletic stance (jump stance, your feet are slightly narrower than shoulder width, athletic stance, your feet are slightly wider than shoulder width)..

So why the narrow stance? Feels more natural with my feet a little farther apart.

It's not really that narrow, just narrower than say, a squat stance...and the reason is because in an explosive movement you want your knees facing straight forward, the way they are when you run. However, when you squat, you want a slightly wider stance to engage more of your glutes and outer quad muscle. That make sense? Sorry if it doesn't...I'm pretty out of it right now.

Anyone interested in strength training should read Starting Strength and Practical Programming by Mark Rippetoe.
