Have you been pruning your plant like mad? Collecting leaves to dry/etc or have they all just fallen off? It looks like you've removed all the big Sun catcher powerplant leaves.

I've cut off only the leaves that dried up completely from me forgetting to water it.

What I'd do, and folk here would probably disagree, is cut off those two steams with leaves and stick them in two cups of water ( I use shot glasses) and keep them under a humidity dome (a coke bottle with the bottom cut off). In two weeks they will start rooting and Id start again. That stem looks fucked to me.

Use a better potting mix added perlite and keep a plastic bag over them until they are really flourishing.

I just spent 20$ compiling a "good potting mix" that I put in it last week

aren't the stems a little small to start rooting?

My stems browned when I touched them too much, or when other plants were brushing up against them.

I also found that plants could sunburn in bright light, or suffer from drying, steady winds.

New starts grew up, from the bottom.

The greener portions toward the top aren't necessarily too small to root, but they would be coming from a distressed portion of the plant.

They should still be saved, so as not waste potentially viable clones.

Rather than starting with a new, more-absorbent potting mix, you might get away with mulching the top with peat moss. Then, water whenever the color of the moss tells  you it's getting dry.

Just cut of the top part away from the brown- and you can try to root it if it isn't rot- I doubt it is rot because rot starts below soil or rarely at the top of a topped off stem... Neither are in your case.. Is it squishy?
You could also leave it there, if it starts spreading then definately cut if off!

I won't disagree at all.  That's sound advice.  Better yet, if you can afford it, is to put them in something like this:

Your soil mix is good and the lights satyr suggested are important.

I used four 2 foot fluoros, two "daylight" bulbs, and two "cool white" bulbs. Find something with an appropriate spectrum, this is essential to the health of the plant and often goes ignored by most growers.

I would have made at least one cutting right away to avoid losing my plant.

okay so I just cut off the top part, just below the brown. aside from that, the plant seems fine.

the branches with leaves is only an inch long. that's really big enough to root?

and I doubt root rot. I just repotted it last week with an organic miracle gro/orchid bark/perlite mix with rocks below the soil for drainage.

You saw the roots.  Did they look like root rot?  Because I doubt it too.  When I was mad about cuttings I did some that were an inch or two.  I also used rooting hormone and it worked very well.  Yes, you can certainly cut the top off and root it.

Most important though is the lighting, humidity and soil mix.

I'll tell you what worked GREAT for me.  Sand.  I used lots of sand in the soil mix and never had a problem.  Great drainage and you can water like mad without drowning her.

Ive rooted several cuttings of salvia where the Stem was only half an inch long. Salvia roots like no other plant Ive ever seen.

That's not rot. Your salvia has no use for those higher nodes and is dying back to a lower one where the leaves are.
