So anyways I had this crazy idea see, for the past hour or so I have been putting together a website that is formatted for the iPhone/iPod Touch that is perfect for on the go Mushroom identification.
Using 7 characteristics of a Mushroom those being: Gills, Cap, Hymenium, Stipe, Spore Print Color, and Ecology. The search engine I built will match those with that of species in the database or user-submitted species. That way when your out in the middle of nowhere you can bust out your iPhone go to this website and figure out exactly what you are looking at.
In my opinion is not too crazy, since me and a friend of mine had pretty much the same idea two weeks ago, when we ran through the woods, having a hard time, finding the mushrooms we had in front of us in the book I held in my hand.
Well, yeah, we're crazy as hell, but the idea isn't

Make it an app and your in business, iPod touches are really only useful with WiFi and I don't think many hunters hunt in "hotspots."
And plus if you have access to the Internet when your on a hunt why not just use the 3 billion other resources?
To reitterate, I don't think you'd be making much of a breakthrough unless you program an app, that would be a ton more help, shit I'm posting off my iPod right now!

I'm not sure, I couldn't find any.
@German Kahuna it might be just you, that link works fine for me.
@fahkface Well with a little help I could have this done in no time
@deadhead227 Would 99cents be a fair price for the app? Or should I make it free and place ads in it?

I'd probably pay it if it was very good and thorough, but unless your really gonna devote time to it and perfect it I'd say free and just put ads in it if you must.
But if you have the ability to make a really good in depth guide with tons of species then go for it, I'd pay.
And Salomon, I've found squares in Starbucks, but never cubes

I know lol I meant you getting your post inside the quote was fail haha.
Well I really do want to commit to this because in the beginning it was just going to be for myself but if I could make some money on the side too and help others out why not.
I'll keep you guys up to date on it's status.

I think this has potential.
I wouldn't charge people for it but would ask for contributions to expand it or improve it.
Well done.

um, this isn't quite related, but i'd like to point out that if you take photos with a newer iPhone or a couple other GPS-enabled smartphones, your photo is tagged with exact GPS coordinates. And if you upload these photos of, say, your super-secret patch, well, it's not a secret anymore to anybody who knows to look at its EXIF data.

Too bad shroomery filters EXIF data.
Maybe the data is still available from people who use offsite image hosting!

The iPhone asks you if you would like to GeoTag your photo, so its totally on the uploader.
Hmm well doing it alone for Psylocybes would really take down the amount of work, I guess that is what I will do. After all that is what a majority of us are looking for anyways, if your looking for gourmet mushrooms chances are you know what you are doing.
