Once it has its first set of true leaves fertilization can commence.

Depends on the soil, some of it's pre-fertilized and might not need feeding right up till flowering if you veg for say around 20-25 days.
Generally it's a couple of weeks i think, start low and work up.
Seedlings are sensitive and don't need feeding if they're in soil, you're waiting till the roots fill out the soil a bit basically.

ok, the plant's getting pretty big leaves now, but I just noticed a bit of yellow coloring on the very tips of two biggest leaves. what do I need to do? I moved the light a bit closer to start (it was about 6 inches away before, I moved it to like 3 inches), but I don't know if that's actually the problem. underwatering? overwatering?

help

oh and I also just transplanted it yesterday, so maybe it's just weak because of that?

It's hard to say without a pic.

If it's over watered the leaves will droop, let the soil dry out between waterings, not so the plant wilts but you should be able to judge moisture levels by the weight of the pot.

Are the serrated teeth on the leaf edges pointing upwards ?, that's a sign of heat stress, it can lead to damaged leaves.

It could be nutrient burn, PH issues or deficiency. Unlikely nute burn though if you haven't been feeding.
PH issues and deficiencies can look similar, the way to tell the difference is with a PH testing kit.

When you water collect the first bit of run off that comes out of the bottom of the pot for testing, use that with your PH testing solution/kit

The PH wants to be around the 6 to 7 mark.

no, the teeth on the leaves look fine. the soil I'm using is like 75% random soil in a bag that my dad uses for his garden, and 25% peat moss. and I always wait until the top of the soil has dried completely before I water again.

i'll see if I can find anything to test PH around my house but I doubt it

Keep an eye on it and see if it progresses, sounds a bit early to worry if it's just a very small part on the tip .
I've had the very very tips go yellow/dry and it's never gone any further or caused any problems. I didn't usually see it earlier on in veg tho.

The lack of PH adjusting and testing equipment could lead to issues.

A good pH meter is a sound investment... I recommend Hanna Instruments
