'Drunk, high driver' killed cyclist
Updated: 20:31, Tuesday October 13, 2009

A driver was high on LSD and at least four times the legal blood alcohol limit when he crashed into and killed one cyclist and severely injured another.

Luke Adam Shields, 32, had taken LSD and was at least four times the legal blood alcohol limit when he crashed into brothers Sean and Alun Brindle in the Melbourne suburb of Mentone.

Paramedic Sean Brindle was visiting Melbourne from Western Australia to spend Christmas with his family last year when he was hit from behind and thrown 51 metres from his bike. The expectant father, 35, suffered a severe brain injury and died three days later when his life support was switched off.

His brother Alun, 33, suffered severe head and leg injuries and spent two weeks in a coma.

During the pre-sentence hearing, prosecutor Gavin Silbert SC told the County Court in Melbourne that Shields and his girlfriend shared four bottles of white wine that day and had taken LSD.

They were driving to get more drugs when Shields crashed his unroadworthy Toyota sedan into the brothers at a speed of at least 77km/h on Beach Road, Mentone.

After hitting the cyclists, Shields told his girlfriend, 'Oh my God, I think I've killed someone', Mr Silbert said.

He attempted suicide the next day.

Alun Brindle, a naval officer from Maidstone in Melbourne's west, did not open his eyes until January 13 - the day of his brother's funeral.

But due to his injuries, which included amnesia, he did not learn of his brother's death until March.

He spent nine months in rehabilitation and described his life as a 'nightmare' in his victim statement read to court.

'A significant part of my being has simply died along with him,' Alun Brindle said.

'I have never before encountered in my life a feeling of such pure hatred,' he said of Shields.

John Brindle said his fit son's life was cut short because of a drunken 'drug crazed idiot'.

'This senseless act has caused the destruction of our lives,' he said.

Defence lawyer Peter Chadwick said Shields, from Mentone, had had a drug and alcohol addiction for most of his adult life.

He read two letters to the court written by Shields, who described himself as stupid, selfish and sorry.

While they were read, John Brindle left the court while Alun Brindle blocked his ears.

In them, Shields says: 'I pray for Alun every night that he recovers as much as possible. I wish I could replace my life with Sean's. I don't deserve your forgiveness and I'll probably never forgive myself.'

The court heard Shields had taken amphetamines and heroin in the two days before the crash and was possibly still coming down from their effects when it happened.

Mr Chadwick said his client's 'borderline personality disorder' made him more vulnerable to drug abuse.

He said Shields admitted being 'out of control' on drugs and alcohol in the six-month period before the crash.

The court heard it was Shield's third drink-driving offence and fourth major offence involving a vehicle.

Shields, who is in custody, pleaded guilty to culpable driving, negligently causing serious injury and drink-driving.

He will be sentenced at a date to be fixed.

Words cannot describe what a fucking idiot this guy is. He completely deserves what is coming to him. He is a prime example of what happens when irresponsible, stupid people use drugs.

An innocent man dead and another gravely injured... and yet another argument for the drug prohibitionists. Thanks, asshole.

exactly.

4 bottles of wine and some acid??  you should be doing nothing more than walking while under the influence of that much and yet they chose to drive.  now, his life is ruined along with the lives of others.  once again kids, no matter how much of a good idea it seems at the time, DO NOT GET IN YOUR CAR.  feeling like superman does not mean that you are superman.

its kinda funny how all the stories of drunk drivers getting into wrecks and killing people and yet its still not illegal, yet ONE DEATH from salvia(not even under its influence) and every ones in a hurry to ban it. it seems like drunk drivers killing people is a common thing to read in the news but yet no one reads of anyone ODing or killing people while high of marijuana and its still illegal. we live in a very strange world.

Just because someone is on a lot of drugs doesn't mean that they don't have somewhere to go.

To answer your question, this person was driving to get more drugs.
