Flanders teen sold drugs with parents' OK, police say(NY)
September 30, 2009 By JOHN VALENTI  john.valenti@newsday.com

Southampton Town police charged a 17-year-old Flanders boy Wednesday with selling drugs out of his home, with his parents' permission.

Entering the home at 211 Longneck Blvd. through what they described as a thick cloud of marijuana smoke, officers said they found 11 people inside.

Among them, police said, were two 14-year-old girls, two 16-year-old boys and a 17-year-old boy.

Police said two 18-year-olds and a 19-year-old were also in the home.

Police said they arrested four people in the raid Tuesday around 8:45 p.m. and seized cocaine, marijuana, heroin, ecstasy and prescription painkillers.

Those drugs were "being sold to youths in the area with the knowledge of the parents at the residence," Southampton Town police said in a release. The arrests followed a months-long investigation, police said.

Michael E. White, 17, his mother, Jennifer A. Truskoski, 38, and his stepfather, Joseph J. Mastelli, 36, were arrested.

Also arrested was Robert E. Trent, 18, of 821 E. Main St., Riverhead, police said.

No one else in the house raid was charged, police said. They were released, and in the case of the minors, to relatives, police said.

White was charged with three counts of third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance, six counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, two counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, third-degree criminal possession of marijuana, second-degree criminal sale of marijuana and second-degree criminal use of drug paraphernalia.

In addition, he was charged with three counts of unlawfully dealing with a child and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, police said Wednesday.

Truskoski and Mastelli were charged with five counts of unlawfully dealing with a child, two counts of endangering the welfare of a child and second-degree criminal nuisance.

Trent was charged with second-degree criminal sale of marijuana, two counts of endangering the welfare of a child and marijuana possession, police said.

The four were arraigned Wednesday in Southampton Town Justice Court.

White was ordered held on $50,000 cash bail, Truskoski and Mastelli on $2,500 each, and Trent on $5,000, Southampton police said.

Now let's remember to keep drugs illegal so that kids can't get a hold of them anymore.

With parents like that, they'll still get a hold of them.

In a situation like this in my opinion it is hard to blame the parents. I know every person mentioned in this article personally and even though they are all obviously not perfect they are all basically good people. Has no one here ever had a friend who sold some pot in his or her parents house? It would be hard for the parents to remain oblivious forever. Most likely they did notice eventually and most likely they turned a blind eye saying "Its just pot, their young, their not hurting anybody." Most of the time this is the way it stays. Now lets say the person in question started selling more than pot. Cars are still stopping by, people still coming and going not much of a visible change for the parents to recognize. The only person responsible is the kid. At 17 years old he made his own decisions completely independent of his parents and their knowledge. He was completely aware of the consequences but carried through with his actions anyway. The parents are good people with other kids to look after as well, and because of the irresponsible actions of their eldest their house was raided basically destroyed in the process, they were both arrested and had to spend the night in jail. Basically it all come down to following the laws set forth by Biggie. This lesson being NEVER sell drugs to someone you dont know.

I could spend time picking apart your post piece by piece, but I'll just say that you make a lot of assumptions and it doesn't seem like you read the article carefully.  The parents were there during the raid and were arrested.  This was not a case of the parents turning a blind eye to a little pot use.  Maybe you missed the part where heroin, coke, and ecstasy was seized.  You must have also missed the part where the article says that the parents knew and that's why they were arrested.

The parents were present at the time of the raid, along with the "thick cloud of marijuana smoke", but no where in the article does it allude to the fact that there was cocaine, heroin and ecstasy just lying about in the open for parents to notice. While it's not really probable that the parents were entirely unaware of drug sales stopping by, Pyromani is absolutely right about the fact that all drug deals are going to look the same, regardless of what your selling.

Maybe it's not the best parenting and in an ideal world this wouldn't happen, but Flanders is a far shot from ideal. There is no magical difference between seventeen and eighteen. White is responsible for his actions but should a whole family suffer on the assumptions of some police work?

Oh yeah just to clarify one more time. There is now way under any circumstances that the parents were aware that their child was selling heroin and coke, of this I am sure.
