Legal hallucinogenic drug big in Britain Published: Sept. 18, 2009 at 12:37 PM
Salvia, a legally available hallucinogenic drug in Britain, is fueling a YouTube video craze in the country, observers say.
It is said to supply a short-lived but intense "trip" when smoked.
And now, with wide usage of the drug, hundreds of young Brits have posted video footage of their experiences online, The Daily Telegraph reported Friday.
One such shot, in which a girl says her mouth is going to fall off, reportedly has been viewed more than 2 million times.
Salvia is a member of the mint family. It contains salvinorin A, a dissociative drug -- one that is believed to reduce signals between the conscious mind and the rest of the brain.
It's also legal in the United States but the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency has listed it as a "drug of concern." It is illegal in Australia, Belgium and Germany, among others.
It is not believed to be toxic or addictive.
However, its powerful psychoactive effects have been linked with the suicide of an American teenager, Brett Chidester. The 17-year-old from Delaware died of carbon monoxide poisoning in his family garage. His death certificate cites salvia as a contributing factor.
"Just because it's legal doesn't mean it won't do you harm," Dr. Ken Checinski, a lecturer in addictive behavior at St. George's University of London, said.
"Salvia contains a number of psychoactive amphetamine-like substances. It can increase the heart rate and raise blood pressure. In extreme cases, it can produce a psychotic reaction."

How about "just because it's illegal doesn't mean it will do you harm"? it goes the same way.

If people continue to use it in irresponsible ways then things will change and it might not be legal for long its not the drug really its people doing retarded things while on it then posting on youtube people need to apporch it with like everything else with caution and know what there getting into before smoking such a powerful hallucinogenic.
Some who smoke it may not have a clue what there getting into might be to much to bare for some.

I am sick of hearing about this stupid kid killing himself because his parents are religious freaks and put too much pressure on him to be perfect. The parents just need something to blame that isn't them selves or the societal pressures put on this young man who if his parents hadn't made him feel so guilty for wanting to explore his mind and soul on his own terms and who hadn't demonized drugs in his mind, might not have driven him to end it all.
Salvia gives you a sneak peak into your soul and another realm that is not of this plain of existence at all. A beautiful and frightening reality where there is no longer fear of anything. The world as you knew it with all it's expectations and rules, ceases to exist tot he point that you accept the new crazy beautiful, inside out and upside down and inverted world that you are somehow a part of at a molecular level.
People say that they experience for lack of a better explanation, the death of their ego and this actually feels like death does and this is at fist scary but then peaceful.
This young man probably just couldn't deal with his real life issues that comes with religious parents and maintaining a high grade point average and he had a girl friend too, she may have had something to do with him hating life.

Now personally I can't stand Salvia, but this bullshit makes me angry. There is nothing amphetamine-like about the salvinorins.

Somehow I don't doubt this bit of information.
