Baby found heroin on doorstep
Published Date: 24 August 2009
A TEN-MONTH-OLD baby boy picked up a heroin wrap while playing on his doorstep and was just seconds away from popping it into his mouth. Furious dad James McKie fears his son Cameron could have died had his family not spotted what was going on.
James' mum Susan McKie saw him pick up the small silver piece of foil containing brown powder. The shocked 19-year-old dad said drug use is rife near where he lives in Perth Street, Hartlepool, but doesn't want his family or any other innocent youngsters to suffer at the hands of those "intent on killing themselves".
Police have carried out a number of drugs raids in the area as part of a zero tolerance approach.
James said: "Cameron could have died.
"I don't really care about druggies. They can kill themselves as long as they don't end up killing innocent kids."
James and his mum Susan, 46, were chatting on the doorstep around 7pm on Tuesday and Cameron was sitting in between James' legs.
He said: "He was sat between my legs, not facing me.
"He picked up something and he was putting it in his mouth.
"It was something wrapped up in foil and when we opened it, it was heroin.
"If my mum wasn't sat beside me he would be dead, he wouldn't be here."
James, whose partner Stacey Toyne, also 19, rushed out of a neighbour's house when she heard what had happened, added: "It's just the shock. I know people who have been on drugs and people who have been killed from it."
Former TMD Friction worker James said about three weeks ago, he had seen a hypodermic needle in his street and a youngster aged about five kicking it before a neighbour threw it down the drain.
A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: "An officer went round to speak to Mr McKie and check on the child. Importantly, the child did not ingest any drugs. Nevertheless, he has come into contact with it."
Inspector Mick Brown said: "This area is one which we focus a lot of attention on.
"Recently, we have been receiving intelligence from the community about this area and we have acted upon this by carrying out a number of drugs raids with positive results. Control measures are in place and we adopt a zero tolerance policy to drugs activity."
Hartlepool Borough Council said if anyone sees anything looks remotely like drug litter, they should avoid touching or moving it and should call the council on (01429) 523333 during normal office hours or (01429) 869424 out of hours.

Drug litter? Sounds like a job for CLEAN VIBES! Post-show volunteering is where it's at! (Boy do I miss the days of ground-scoring 2 pounds of bubble hash and 3 sheets of blotter at Roo while getting paid!)

Where's the testing and confirmation in this story? A kid picks up a piece of foil with some brownish crap on it; this is a story?
