Family Sues Westmoreland County Jail Over Heroin Withdrawal Death

Posted: 9:02 am EDT August 19, 2009Updated: 9:57 am EDT August 19, 2009
GREENSBURG, Pa. -- An inmate's surviving family is suing a western Pennsylvania jail saying the man died because his complaints about heroin withdrawal were ignored.

The federal lawsuit filed Tuesday in Pittsburgh targets the Westmoreland County Prison in Greensburg where Corey Kardos, 23, was found dead in his cell March 9. At the time, Warden John Walton said Kardos didn't commit suicide and Walton said he had no information about any medical condition that would have contributed to his death.

But Kardos' family claims he was a heroin addict and complained repeatedly about withdrawal symptoms when he was arrested and jailed March 1.

The county isn't commenting on the suit which said Kardos died of malnutrition and other problems caused by his untreated withdrawal sickness.

Thats fucking nuts, I used to live in greensburgh and one of my best friends just got sentenced to a year in that same prison. He too was a serious junkie and fully addicted to benzies. In fact his names' Cory too. I hope they're atleast giveing him something to ween him off because if he doesn't have it in him he has seizures, the Dr. even said that his next one might be his last.

I had a friend who has been taking LARGE amounts of Oxycontin, Methadone and Dilaudid for 9-10 years. He had to serve a year in county, he couldn't see his regular Dr and the jail Dr said that he wouldn't give any drugs in "his jail" other than wellbutrin for depression. My friend said he went through hell for the first six months. cops suck ass

you cant really die for opiate withdrawl
he was probably addicted to benzos too or something. If I wasnt allowed to give prisoners drugs and one was complaining about just a heroin withdrawl theres no immediate reason to treat him. if he would have said benzo withdrawl they might have helped him out, which can definately be fatal

Forcing someone to go through H withdrawal seems like cruel and unusual punishment, especially if the sickness can kill them. It seems like the jails have an ethical responsibility to wean them properly.

In the jails here in Baltimore, at least half the people are dope-sick, and if you're not on MMT you're not getting any methadone, the most  you'll see is a couple T3's for the first 3 days, then it's nothing Ibuprofen and Pepto Bismol can't cure they say. What a crock of shit.

edit- I live in Baltimore County now which is a separate county from Baltimore city with different jails. These jails in the county will not supply you with you're methadone even if you have proof of being on a program. Really this is my one true fear, going to jail and W/D'ing because I've done it before and it really was the shittiest experience ever. I could handle the jail itself if I was given my methadone but I really think that they like to see junkies suffer. Treat them a lesson type of mentality, I don't know. Sorry for babbling, I just hate jail and what they do to good people.

Sad thing is that inmates have better healthcare than a civilian/military personal.  They get top of the list for organ transplant even if they are on death row.  What kinda shit is that?  Use them as organ donors.

While you can't die from the actual withdrawl it said he was malnourished.

I'm assuming he was throwing up balls to the walls and had no water / food to hold down. If he even felt like eating or drinking, that is.

I'm sure combining a hot cell + withdrawls + super malnourished = Death

Yeah... opiate withdrawal won't kill you but dehydration and malnutrition will... and opiate withdrawal is known to cause both
