Mushroom Pronunciations
    #10883547 - 08/18/09 02:32 PM (2 years, 9 months ago)

This is the only place i could think of to post this but if you think its wrong than go ahead and move it. But i was just wondering about the pronunciations of some mushrooms. I think maybe we should have a thread or something where you can get a pronunciation for words, maybe have some of you trusted identifiers make sound clips of the names of them.

Just an idea. But can someone help me with a few names real quick.

Like, pan cinctulus, is that "sink-chew-luss" or "kink-chew-luss" or what lol. Id rather just call um subbs (which is "Subb-all-teet-us" ?)

Oh and what about Panaeolus "Pan-aye-less" or is it "Pan-uh-less" or "pan-yuh-less" or somethin like that lol. Sorry, i just want to really know what im saying lol.

I'm not 100% sure if it's there anymore, but Mr. Mushrooms had a good link to his (I think) list of mushrooms and their pronunciation. Or maybe it was Alan? Hmmm

If it follows basic Latin pronunciation (which it should but doesn't always because no one knows Latin anymore...I have the same gripe with Greek, but that's also because I'm Greek, Latin is pronounced basically like Greek (ae in Latin is ai in Greek), Greek's still a living language, Greek's better than everything else, etc.) it should be pretty simple. 'ae' is a long a sound, so Panaeolus should be something like pan-ey-oh-luss. Scientific Latin (and Greek) is basically retarded anyways, since most of the time names are an attempt to fit a non-Latin name into Latin, which works almost as badly as it does into Greek.

I did.  Look up my profile, then main threads.  I'll do it too.

*edit  It's called You don't say?

It's bullshit to say there isn't any proper way to pronounce mushroom names when they sell correct pronunciation books for plants.

There are proper and improper pronunciations, I guess, but even among respected mycologists, there is a variety of pronunciations used.

I remember talking to Tom Volk about the issue once and he said something along the lines of "Depending on what part of the world I am in I might pronounce things differently, like "Am-uh-night-uh" if I am in the US, and "Am-uh-neat-uh" if I am in the UK."  He explained that if he used the less popularly accepted pronunciation in either of the regions that the resident mycologists would critique him, haha.

Panaeolus - "Pan-aye-ole-us"

subbalteatus - "sub-alt-ee-ate-us" or "sub-alt-ee-ott-us"

cinctulus - "sink-too-luss" or "sink-tuh-luss"

even from the standpoint of latin language there is great contention about what pronunciations are deemed proper. i try, for my part, but i frequently mispronounce things out of laziness [cure will attest this]. i ultimately respect any concerted attempt.

Alright guys, this is too common of a mushroom for me to not be able to pronounce it. So how do you guys prefer to say it? Coprinus micaceus?
My-kay-see-us? My-kak-ee-us? My-say-see-us?

I know you posted that a long time ago but I never saw it, thats weird because I'm in America and I always thought it was Am-uh-neat-uh.

I've never even thought about pronouncing it Am-uh-nite-uh.

i say am-uh-neat-uh as well .

what about stuntzii? i know now that its pronounced stunt-zee-i but for years and years we always said stunt-zee and its hard to break that shit.

2 that bug me when i try to say them are caerulescens which for some reason in my head somes out cure-roo-less-ens and caerulipes which i think in my head as cure-oo-lipes. i must be wrong.

and another fucked one is hoogshagenii, i think h-oo-g-shag-en-ee-i.

even just the word psilocybe. i have pronounced si-lo-sibe since i was 13 and now i am 30 and find out its fuckin si-loss-so-bee. i think that way sounds kinda gay .

I won't argue the other ones, but cinctulus would probably be pronounced with a K sound.  Kinc- tul- us.

Er, i now i realize i responded to a 7 month old post, sorry.
