Thoughts?
Yeah, this "program" is not new. It started off as "Kicks for guns" and they gave you a brand new pair of athletic shoes. Now it's $50 on a Wal-Mart card.
I've had the same thoughts about the government wanting to take away our liberty to own a gun. Unless the gun was broken - I'd never take it to them.
They say no questions asked and I believe them. They also say to secure the gun in your vehicle when you bring it in VERSUS brandishing it in the air and yelling...lol
Overall I don't know how effective programs like this are. Also our tax dollars are paying Wal-mart (a corporation) $50 for these cards.
Also in my 1st sentence I put the words "program" in quotes. I am skeptical of most "programs" and "systems".
I know one thing...the Correctional "system" is a fucked up "program"...as is our judicial "system", legislative "system", law enforcement "programs"....etc

No questions asked I'm sure, but what's to stop them to run those guns through forensics? Prints, DNA, barrel scratch patterns etc?
Nothing stops them from doing that. But I don't think those types of forensics are too accurate - You can't match a bullet to millions of guns like you can match a fingerprint. The scratches on the bullet are too random and not unique enough.
They say no questions asked, and they mean that they won't hassle the people that drop off guns and get $50. And that's probably true. They never said they wouldn't hassle the person who used the guns to kill someone.
Quote:
i completely agree with you there.
"here you go, heres my gun"
"thanks, *runs serial #* well seems this is related to a homocide from 2005 your goin to jail"
just doesnt seem straight to me.
Police do lie, but not like that. They aren't going to turn "no questions asked" into "if you drop off a gun we don't like you are going to jail".
Quote:

Hopefully they get them for less than $50. Wal-mart could afford to do that because a lot of them will never be cashed. It is unusual to see the government favoring one corporation in that way, its probably vaguely illegal. Perhaps Walk-mart donates them.

One universal rule about government programs is that they always do the exact opposite of what they intend.

I love how you say that and yet find it so hard to believe that the police may be using the program as a set up.

er, even the shittiest saturday night special is worth more by selling to a pawn shop for actual cash than 50 bucks.
why does the police department care to get people to turn in guns? do you live in some high crime area and they think gangbangers and tweakers need a fix that bad, and not even for real cash?
this just seems sort of stupid. i cant imagine anyone actually doing that, its just too easy to get a lot more for the same amount of effort.

not likely since the pawn shops sell junk guns like Jennings and Ravens for about $60-$100, those are the guns the pawnshops will give you $10 on because they buy them new for under $50

it's supposedly to reduce crime and reduce the number of guns getting to the hands of criminals

you must have some shittastic pawn shops where you live, i have yet to see anything like that.
cheap guns arent worth it, i put my revolver on layaway, although i could have bought it outright, it was simply easier on my bank account to make three payments.

Gun and knife amnesty programs are pretty common.

In Orlando this morning I saw on the news that the police had 14 guns from their "program". They also said you could still pick new athletic shoes or the $50 WalMart gift card. One of the guns the police rec'd was in the shape of a pen. It shot one .22 caliber bullet at a time. It looked exactly like a pen. The guy that donated said it was with his father's World WarII memorabilia and traded it in for the $50 WalMart card
I thought that the .22 caliber pen gun looked very cool and I would've paid $50 for it.
My conclusion: dumb-asses donate guns for a $50 WalMart card.

A old .22 cal pengun that was a war souvenier of his dads for a 50 dollar wallmart card or a pair of fukin shoes........

Im not entirely sure how i feel about this. It seems like A) an attempt at peacfully liberating us of our 2nd ammendmant, and B) a set up.
If i were to walk up there with a fully auto Mac 10, I wonder how they would respond...
Thoughts?
I say walk in with a bomb or RPG of some sort to see what they have to say.
