I think you may be referring to me when you ask who says pf tek sucks,Actually I would like to congratulate you as that is a pretty good yield from a few cakes and I'm not going to say anything bad or bash pf in your thread seeing as I already did my little pf suicide thingie up there,But just consider that I have pulled over an ounce DRY of one flush off one 16 quart sweater box casing with less work than you did with those cakes,One day you will do some casings as well and when you do you wont be looking back to cakes I guarantee,Either way nice grow,Enjoy

Nice grow...I failed miserably at pf cakes. Think i got 4 out of 12 to fruit and it took for ever.
Too much time and work for this cat.

Anyway, Blutjager is right though...casing is WAY fucking easier ,the yields are incredible and the cost is minimal.

Going by the results you've posted , YOU DO , lol 
You've harvested 60 wet from one , and 40 wet from another . While everyone is saying , Very nice for a cake and so on and so on , doesn't change the fact that a 1/4 cup of BRF weighs 52 grams . Multiply that by 2 because of 2 cakes and you get 104 grams of dry sub .
That means your first flushes , 100 grams wet , isn't even 100% BE .  Casings can hit 200-250% with no problems .
You'd have to get 104 grams wet from each cake to approach 200% BE .
Don't take this the wrong way , YOU did GREAT , but even that doesn't change the fact from a BE point of view , PF cakes do , indeed , SUCK .
Throw on top of that how long they take to colonize and how long they take to pin and fruit , and they REALLY SUCK ,lol.

I'm not bashing all of you, nor am I bashing casings. In fact, I started off with PF tek only because I got interested in the hobby through stumbling upon the PF tek (had no idea about casings).
What happened was, I was all prepared to start, then when I began, I found out about casings and everyone was bashing PF tek. I felt like I wasted time/money. I mean, casings weren't overwhelming or anything, I do do my research.
I took all my cakes and spawned them to coir/hpoo and cased using 50/50++. I do have 5-6 trays of casing and loads of LC/rye/hpoo/wbs and an AA921 on hand. My casings are pinning nicely and I do not plan on doing pf tek again.
What happened was, I had two remaining cakes but no tub or time to case them so I said fuck it and threw them into a container w/ perlite and saran wrap. I fanned whenever I thought about it, once a day sometimes, other times 5-10 times a day.
I really neglected the cakes and that's what came up, so pf tek is pretty forgiving but I agree it's lots of work. The thing is that to case, people have to do loads of reading, and that's a turn off to the general person. PF tek is great because it brings ordinary people, who otherwise wouldn't have gotten into mycology or thought about growing, into the hobby.
Casings ARE easier but that's only after you've grasped the concept of them and read enough. I myself did, and I agree, casings blow away pf tek, but I think when people think about starting off using pf tek and come here, they read all these horror stories on it and quit, thinking "I knew it couldn't have been that easy!"
HippieChick: I agree, from a BE point of view, PF tek is horrible, but from a first timer who was worried constantly about contams and failure, to see mushrooms growing, is a HUGE achievement and an ego boost. There's nothing wrong with moving up the ladder to more advanced techniques. I'm just saying that people should start off however they feel comfortable, and not take into account what others say.
For example, mycology is my now #1 hobby. I spend ALL my time researching on how can I improve my technique, and find out what's new and what's experimental. This makes me feel content. I like reading, learning and improving, but for somebody else who has other hobbies and just wants some 'shrooms on the side, I think there's nothing wrong with pf tek if that person doesn't want to get deep into the hobby and read loads.
Anyway, all is good. I hope I didn't come off on the wrong side. I love all of you guys/gals, blutjager, helltick, a lot of people here, thanks for the help. 
Can an admin please move this to the Grow Log & pics forum?

I agree 100%. I am excited as shit for my PF cakes that I put in the FC 5 days ago. I wanted to start out with them knowing damn well they wouldn't grow to what casings would be. I just didn't think I could get as much knowledge or experience without the PF cakes. After all it had really showed me the value of patience, in which I didn't really have. At first I looked at those jars 3-4 times a day because I couldn't wait. I have calmed myself now and since 100% colonized I have done a G2G tranfer to Rye. And to my knowledge they are going great and without contams.
Thanks a lot for the post. It really gives me some more needed confidence and a realistic time frame. Growing mushrooms to me is almost as fun as playing music. I would have to say it is going to me one the most reqarding experience I have ever had.

Damn, whats up with the noob bashing. Not everyone really even KNOWS what "BE" is, never-the-less even cares when doing their first grows. Is it too hard to remember the joys you got when you seen your first piddly ass pins? Most of the time, as a beginner, your proud if you have 5(!) pins. Look at it in another light. He STILL prolly got more for his money with his cakes, than he would have buying them off the street, not counting also the self pride of having grown them himself. Some people just need to be a little more humble in their advanced experience, step down off their pedistal that sits on top of their mountain of mushies, and just simply say...Hey, nice job!

I never said cakes don't have a niche to fill . I started with cakes , 75 of them , and was excited as hell when I got my very first pins . I'd sit and watch them for hours . and learned a great deal

i have to ask man, new to growin, how did you do this, did you make your own substarte or did you buy some already in jars pre-steralized and how many cc's for each jar you usually use, they look good dude, thats why i ask?
