Cacti

I don't know if this is the right place for this question, but the hubby and I are thinking about growing some cacti. We've grown weed, shrooms, and tried poppy (didn't work very well). We love cacti and have heard that some are "magic". Any suggestions on any magic cacti, or some that are just really fun to grow?
I have heard some take years to grow. I think that is so awesome.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

MY favorite thing about growing cacti is that they live for years and years.

This is definitely a good thing.
As pretty as most annual plants are, I just find it disappointing that they die so quickly

That's what I'm looking forward to, being able to tend something for all that time. The shrooms are great, but their life cycle is so short. I have a veggie garden as well, and that's a little better, since it lasts for several months.
But I want something more, you know?
So I should just go through this forum to find some good varieties? And how to go about getting those varieties?

I'll give a list of commonly collected cacti, although there are SO many different kinds it all boils down to personal taste.
Ariocarpus Astrophytum Echinocactus Trichocereus (Echinopsis) Mammillaria Gymnocalycium Lophophora Opuntia Myrtillocactus Pilosocereus Stetsonia
Those are the most common ones I see.
I'm going to assume you are in the states and say you can find many (but certainly not all) of these at your local big box hardware stores and local nurseries (check your local listings to see if there are any that specialize in cacti).
You can also find them online at ethnobotanical vendors such as Bouncing Bear Botanicals (which is a shroomery sponsor, not highly recommended for accuracy however), auction sites, or just do a simple google search.

I got a trichocereus bridgesii from BBB and it was good enough. I'd recommend you get a bridgesii, as they are usually the most consistent ones in term of alkaloids, and grow pretty fast and look nice (They're my favorite so far for ornamentals).

Is there some special way to know if a cacti is "magic". I don't particularily need one that is but that would be cool too.
I am looking for something beautiful and fun to take care of. Does that make sense?

bridgesii and pedro are the two most common starter cacti. trichocereus bridgesii and trichocereus pachanoi. They're easy to identify and common, so you wont get misled by the dozens of sites that mislabel their plants to make more money.

San Pedro (Trichocereus pachanoi) seems to be the most commonly grown as far as "magic" cacti goes. The "magic" trichocereus grow fast enough to be adequate sources of mescaline, and people can pretty reasonably become self-sufficient with a small collection of them.
Peyote (Lophophora species) is the "traditional" mescaline-producing-cacti but they grow painfully slow, and you'd be a fool to grind up a large enough quantity for consumption. Doing so will probably get you flamed on this forum as well.

May I ask why the Peyote (Lophophora species) has been black-balled compaired to the other cacti?
I have other magic things to enjoy and mescaline doesn't really interest me all that much. I just thought it would be cool to grow one among the other cacti I will be growing. Just to say I did, you know.

There are a LOT of 'magic' cacti.(cacti that contain mescaline) However most have very small doses that won't be enough to give you any effects. The most common ones purchased for consumption are probably pedro and bridgesii. Dosage is always relative, but ~30g of dried prepared tissue is the norm when dealing with these two.

it's endangered and takes much longer to grow.

Ahh, I see.
Yeah I highly doubt I would actually use any as a "magic" cacti, I'd just like to be able to say I grew one.
Thanks so much for all your help!!!

Feelingfunny,
I suggest you start with the following:
-trichocereus bridgesii. It's very consistent with mescaline and my favorite of the 'magic' cacti) -trichocereus pachanoi. San pedro, very easy to take care of. I don't do anything with mine and they grow fine. -trichocereus peruvianus. My favorite one to trip off of so far, this ones just a little tough as there's many fakes floating around.
