2nd Golden Oyster grow (PICS) and Questions!

Ok, so heres my second golden oyster attempt. 1st was was outside in mini-greenhouse and worked out well, and this one I decided to take the mini g.house to my attic room, as FAE and temps seem about right, natural 65-70 F and lots of FAE from an open window, also flies were a bit of a problem outside for me.
The spawn rate was insanely low, I used 3 just over half pint PF tek cakes and just grated them into my pasteurized straw and old egg boxes mix. probably a 15 :1 ratio!!!
Straw and spawn was layered into an old transparent bag to mimic a straw log. Straw was soaked for 2 hours in anti bac washing up liquid and was pasteurized for a hour / half, by simply pouring 170 water into a fermenting bin and covered with a blanket, then left to drain and cool overnight..
this thing seemed to take 3 weeks to fully colonized, probably cause of the low spawn rate and temps about 70 F, just left in a normal tote with a loose lid.
I'm amazed this thing even fully colonized with such a low spawn rate, oyster myc seems really really hard to contam!
So I'm happy but only one cluster, ( well two right next to each other) grew, and the same happened with my outdoor one.
SO my questions are, what is the major factor to getting these things to pin all over?
i just poked holes in it all over as it was colonizing, and as I seen the white lumps that turn into pins i just cut around them to expose them to air. A few more spots pinned but failed to grow, is this my second flush pin set?
Also I dunked my 1st oyster grow and the straw turned a bit green, but did flush again.
What steps should I take for second flush? dunk or not|?> still seems like lots moisture in the block.
anyways heres the pics;

Your mushrooms, though few are very large. I think that's about right for a slightly undernourished (low spawn) block.
FOr more mushrooms use more spawn. For more pins, provide holes in advance where you want the pins to form.
Personally, I love big mushrooms like you have a lot more than a lot of smaller ones, that ultimately weitgh exactly the same amount.
As to whether to dunk or not, I go by feel. If the block's nice and heavy, I don't dunk.
Good growing,
Jef

thanks Jef, im thinking of making a bubbler soon for the greenhouse, I've been leaving the top of the bag lightly folded over, would it be better to fully expose the top?

The log looks fairly small. That flush looks good considering the low spawn rate and small amount of straw used. You want more pins use a lot more spawn and substrate. ALso if areas are pinning then aborting early on , make sure your humidity is high.

You seem to have done just fine.
Oysters are not that fussy about perfect humidity but need lots of fresh air. The bubbler may be necessary for other species though.

thanks for the input guys, would i be right in thinking then you can hang straw logs or other large bags pretty much in any room of the correct temperature as the correct humidity is supplied by the plastic covering the log, so no real need for a green house setup? so the fruits come from your holes as they are looking for the fresh air.
I'm amazed that these grew so large indoors, like i say its three stories up and theres always a nice breeze coming through the window in quite a small room.

You still need a good RH, otherwise you'll see a lot of aborts as the pins dry out. I've had logs fruit in less than ideal places, and they tend to make two or three really good clusters, and dozens of aborts.

I'm currently looking for cultures of the following species:
Calocybe indica, Chlorophyllum rachodes, Lentinula boryana, Polyporus umbellatus

cool thanks. gonna build some kinda bubbla then, got shitialkes to fruit soon so they'll need the humidity, not that I need an excuse to build something new!

I wrap either those filmy plastic dropsheets you use for painting, or dry cleaner bags over the logs. THis allows FAE right thru the plastic and keeps the humidity up with no fuss and no bother.
If you're careful to make sure it is well sealed up with no holes, you'll also have no bugs. It isolates from all other contams too, and keeps any (sickening) spores inside.
Good growing,
Jef
