It really strikes me as being supremely true... but out of curiosity, letting that go, what would you have me do instead?

Don't expect anything out of anybody. Don't be surprised when they let you down, or don't understand. Always show people your very best, of course, but don't let it get set up to where other people's shortcomings can drag you down. Mostly, understand that you alone can take care of yourself, and expecting anybody to come through for you is only opening yourself up for disappointment, if not grief. I'm not sure how to answer this right now, mostly just don't expect anything from anybody, and don't count on anybody. That's not to say don't see the beauty in things, just don't open yourself up to disappointment. How can anybody let you down if you knew better to than to expect them not to? That's mostly what I mean, I think.
