 addictive qualities/personalities - are they genetic?

for me personally i've fucked with alot of shit, and theres no possible way that i can get addicted to anything. i have complete self control, and can help myself even with the dealers number in my phone. my family has no problems whatsoever as far as addiction, not even alcoholism! nothing, it's nearly impossible for me to get addicted to some of the most addictive drugs. not gonna try heroin, i can say from personal experience that i'm no addict in any way.
are your addictive personalities genetic? this question always ponders me on how people can get so into a drug and get lost, and slip down under.
please tell me your stories, this question has been traveling my mind for a bit.

Well my father was addicted to alcohol, my mothers father was too. I drink once in a while but I don't think that i'll ever get addicted to alcohol, more of a pothead.
Then again I have two brothers which are both hooked on a shitload and I don't do that either...
So no I don't think it's genetic

The trick to getting addicted to drugs is to have your exact same mindset. "i have complete self control" gets you in more trouble than "I'm just not gonna even tempt myself".

i think you are wrong actual, it depends on the person. which is why i made this thread.
i myself do have complete self control. but theirs people like you that will say "NO you don't!" well we are on the internet how could you distinguish from real people. i'm stating my situation with drugs, i've been through the routes thus far, and drugs are something that cannot take over my life.
like i said, and if your read my posts then i hope you understand where i am coming from.
which is why i made this damn thread homey!

yes addictive personalities are genetic, which means it is easier to become addicted to something like alcohol if your parents were addicted, but that doesnt necessarily mean you will

My dad is quite the alcoholic, I haven't taken up his addiction. Not my drug of choice.
I've tried almost all your basic drugs, some more than I like to admit. For some reason, I never felt the urge to continue to use these harder drugs, yet I smoke pot like a fiend.

if you enjoy something...addiction is inevitable. so as long as people have a reason to live...they already have an addiction.

I doubt it.
Many members of my family have addictive personalities (Americans seem to be addicted to something though: TV, food, cigarettes, alcohol, whatever) but I've never felt that way personally. Even pot, which isn't addictive physically but addictive psychologocially, my brother seems sort of addicted, which I think is lame if that's all you care about and do it all the time (it depends on the person, I can't handle it all the time if I'm worrying about school or work, but I can do it fairly often).

but what if you have self control . ex: have an 8 ball in front of you. which lasts you more than a month?
enjoyment intertwines with self control. due to the fact with enjoyment you must have self control .

wait so do you agree with my statement as well ? i'm a lil sleep induced heavy minded right now , bare with me.
but really , for me ex: is getting a g a coke and making it last until 4 days later, then never buying it for another 1-2month after. which is called self control, and not addiction.
are we on the same page? lol

some would argue that even using cocaine - and planning on buying it again in the future - is a sign of addiction.
sure you aren't physically addicted - you wont experience withdrawals.
but if you like something enough to already be planning on using it again...

naw im saying everyone has an addiction to something, but the worse your addiction typically means the less you have in life to live for. so if someone is really addicted to something, and does it every day, and you can watch all the walls around them crumbling because of the addiction, then they arn't just addicted, they are suicidal as well. because if you take that one addiction away, they will have nothing to live for.
the key is balance, find lots of enjoyable things in life. and if it takes drugs for your day to be enjoyable, you have an addiction, even if your switching which drugs your taking.
