Drug users plunder church's poppies July 13, 2009 - South London Press
WHILE worshippers at a church give praise to the Lord upon high – another congregation is flocking to its gardens in a bid to get high.
Desperate drug users in search of a recession-busting fix are attempting to harvest opium from poppies growing in the gardens in St John’s Church, Waterloo.
The poppy plunderers are using razor blades to lacerate the seedpods of the plants to milk them for their narcotic contents.
The treacle-like brown drug is then smoked or made into a mind-bending tea that gives users a stoned-like high that can last for hours.
Around half-a-dozen poppy plants within the scenic garden of the landmark church have been slashed to harvest their potent ingredients.
The South London Press visited the park this week to gather evidence after an anonymous tip-off.
We then enlisted the help of experts from the South London Botanical Institute who confirmed the plants were drug-producing opium poppies.
Church officials were shocked when we alerted them to the discovery.
Head verger Bill Messenger said: “We had no idea this was going on.
“We will ask the gardeners to remove them immediately.”
Opium poppies, whose Latin name Papaver sominferum loosely translates as “sleep-bringing poppy”, are common in the UK and it is not illegal to grow them.
But farmers who wish to extract opium from the plants to produce medical products such as the pain-killing drug morphine must have a special licence.
In the United States opium poppies are prohibited under drug laws and its not unusual for illegal poppy growing dens to be raided by cops – just as cannabis factories are here.
The garden at St John’s Church is maintained by volunteers from homelessness charity St Mungo’s.
A spokeswoman for the charity said: “It’s a great pity if any plants in the St John’s garden are being harmed.
“Our volunteers give their time and energy to help keep it beautiful for local residents and the wider community.
“We’ll be keeping an extra eye on the garden over the next few weeks and really hope that no more plants are damaged in any way at all.”

Wow, thats the first time I've heard of poppy tea referred to as "mind-bending." I sure as hell would be picking some if I'd come across them.

I wonder how they will remove the plants without damaging them.

To get any decent amount to last the year I go through about 150 or so, (this story is almost the equivalent of someone finding a blunt on the floor), thankfully gardeners in my area love to decorate the very front of their garden with them, so it really isn't hard. This guy hasn't been cutting properly if you can see the damage

I love how they're so worried and yet fail to consider that the plants are annuals and are at the end of their lives anyways, thus the pod...
Moving them would be futile because they will be dead in a matter of weeks anyway.
Also, that looks like far more than 6 pods...

It was a half-dozen plants.
Still minuscule and seems a little off, but numbers have never been the anti-drug articles strong points.

There's more than 6 pods there, but the article stated only half a dozen got cut for harvesting.
