Actually, I've tried this several times with no luck whatsoever. The metabolites never exhibited any inhibitory effects on bacteria or fungi.  The last time I tried it I was growing morel mycelium in quart mason jars.  When I went to check on them one was completely purple. The bottom inch of the jar was filled with a fluid that was comparable in color to a very dark grape juice, as a matter of fact I had to hold it up to the light to see it wasn't dark.

I presumed this was in response to some sort of infection as the temps were low and colonization was not complete.  I drew some of the fluid off and shot it into plates with both bacteria and fungal contamination.  There was no inhibitory effect whatsoever.

Just because it produces a metabolite, by no means does this make it antibiotic.  As a matter of fact in the brewing and distilling industry this happens all the time, most often due to stress.  If too high a gravity (high carb/sugar content) wort/wash/mash is used or if the fermentation temps are too high a great deal of unwanted by products such as methanol, esters and other organic compounds are produced.  This is why ale often has an estery or fruity taste whereas lagers which are fermented in cooler temps do not.  When these biological stresses are increased and byproducts are produced in excess this often times leaves the organism at a greater risk for contamination, not a lesser one.

Re: supposed therapeutic properties of "myc piss". [Re: fastfred]

Sorry to revive this old thread, but I'd like to update the relevant info discussed here re: therapeutic properties of "myc piss".

After the discussion above, in hopes of getting more of the supposed "goodness" contained in "myc piss", I stressed a jar I had to the max (because the jars I had until then were all pristinely white, with a very rare yellow drop of "myc piss" - if at all).

So, I stressed that jar to the max and then drank the water. It was nasty, did not have the same taste and did not give me the same effect (made me feel tired and dull - but it was just that once).

I let some weeks pass, by which time ~10 new jars, healthy and unstressed, came along. I "drank" them daily, about 2 pint jars daily, am and pm, after 8-12hr soak in cold deep-well untreated water (the soak is accomplished by simply adding water to the colonized jar until full).

And so here I am to confirm my initial observation about the tonic-like effect of a healthy, vigorous, pristinely white cubensis mycelium.

This time I did not have any infections and can only confirm that late at night it brings sweet sleep (in ~15-20 mins) but does not make you sleepy during the day, when it just makes you calm and puts you in a good mood.

So, it's not "myc piss". The tonic and apparent antibiotic is in a healthy, unstressed mycelium. My only trial of actual "myc piss" suggested that it may be toxic.
