"Made in China" - boycott or embrace?
    #10611775 - 07/02/09 07:48 PM (14 years, 9 months ago)

I came upon this dilema as I realized I need a new pair of shoes. Easy enough I will just buy Canadian made shoes. But here's the problem. Try finding a stylish pair of sneakers made in Canada. Even the US for that matter.
It doesn't even have to be shoes! Any article of clothing be it shirts, jeans, belts, jackets, etc. Are all linked to sweatshops in hard labor countries with horrible wages and working conditions.

I'm not certain what I'll decide but all signs are leading towards embrace it. Damn.

Gotta start somewhere. How hard would it be for someone to start a company that makes clothing that is NOT red green outdoorsy shit. I've been searching around the net and that's all I find. Farmer john shit.

Where's the American/Canadian equivalent to Levi's jeans?

Lol why not?
Your logic isn't flawed its not logic.
I wouldn't open a sweatshop but buying stuff from it means you help paying someone that apparently cant get better money without doing something even less pleasant.

uh.
no.

your money doesn't go to the poor slave child. it goes to the corporation. you are supporting slavery. go read some H.D.Thoreau....just because we are only men and do not have the reasonable opportunity to fight against such great tyranny doesn't mean we should sit idly by and support it passively. i choose to wash my hands of injustices such as slavery and the like....which is why i don't support "made in china" nike bullshit

an easy way around it is to buy clothing second hand. That way, even if it was made in china, your money is not going directly to those companies anymore.

I know Toronto has many places to find Canadian made items, or else check out the internet. Lots of stuff up on the internet. Roots is a good one.

It's hard. When I first decided to go away from sweatshop goods I had the same problem. But it is a better choice in the end, and you actually can end up with cheaper stuff that is better quality.

Free trade with china benefits both them and us.  If you dont buy made in china goods you deny impoverished chinese the ability to choose a higher paying factory job, factory jobs that lift entire families out of poverty.

I buy American as much as possible. That said if I want a nice new pair of Jordan's or a nice button up im not going to stop myself because it was imported.

American corporations may exploit workers in other countries by paying them cheaper wages, but they choose to work there because it is likely the best available job.

Im hoping the new surge in Afganistan doesnt affect the prices on my poppy pods

Exactly.

I would not support slavery, but then that's why I don't buy from North Korea.

Buying from a company whos workers freely choose to work there helps both you and them.  You get cheaper products, and the people get more jobs.  Its not like if the factory needs to hire another person because of your purchases that they steal them from the streets and lock them up.  They freely volunteer to work.

If you want to make a difference than you should buy from companies that have labor practices you support, but to write off a whole country just cuz you think people are better with no job than a job is stupid.  There is nothing wrong with buying from a company that uses very low paying jobs, so long as the people voluntarily work there.

How arrogant to say these people are better off with no job when youa re the rich person buying from them.  That is their choice, and they're better off with some money than no money.
