Ethan Nadelmann vs. Former Drug Czar
Bill Bennett
June 15, 2009 - opposingviews.com
Based on more and more states legalizing medical marijuana, American
public opinion seems to favor marijuana reform. But does that mean the
drug war is a failure? Drug Policy Alliance Executive Director Ethan
Nadelmann appeared on CNN this week and debated former drug czar Bill
Bennett about whether the war is working.

Holy christ, Ethan is an incredibly sharp debater. He used every second of time they gave him to voice his opinion.

legalization = more drug use???
Are there people out there who are just sitting around waiting for drugs to become legal so that they can go out and get fucked up? The only drugs affected by their legality are the unpopular ones.
And what the hell is the deal with the prohibitionists thinking that legalization will make drugs more available to kids? When I was in high school I got high before I got drunk, because no one would sell me alcohol.
Help me find the logic in this. Am I missing something?
Sometimes I wish there were some prohibitionists on this site to argue their side.

Agreed - It's good to see because we all know they rarely pick good debaters for that side of the argument.

Wow, the myths just keep rolling out.
Bill: "marijuana is the number one drug for which people sought treatment for"
Nadleman knows this, but didn't have the time to say it: those studies count ALL admissions to ALL treatment centers. Included are the millions ordered by courts for drug evaluations and treatment (weekly meetings and testing) as a result of marijuana possesion, paraphernalia charges, and nondrug offenses for which evidence of marijuana use is known.
You can't count court orders where the person goes to treatment for a day a week or faces jail as an indication of a problem. These people get their records erased at best or avoid jail if they say they have a problem and go to treatment.
Bill also just ignored the plain evidence and polls that marijuana is easier to get in high school than alcohol (was true when I was in school). He then claims that legalization will make it more available, totally ignoring the logical and statistical evidence. I could get vicodin or pot easier then alcohol in school.
Just a sample of the bullshit the prohibitionists constantly use.
Bottom line: Is it morally justified to lock up at great expense people for possesing, using, or selling a substance that adults want if they cause no harm nor risk in the process to another's rights? No, clearly not.

They all use the line "We already have alcohol why add another dangerous substance?" If alcohol is so dangerous then why don't we make that illegal? Oh yeah, prohibition DOESN'T work.
