My Multi-Casing Grow Log (Pics) & Questions

Let me start by introducing myself, I'm Dunlap Dubert Dave, You can call me D3. This is my second grow, and first grow log- for quite some time i've referred to the shroomery message boards for answers to my questions that others have already asked and now It's time I join in and post my own! I inoculated 8 brf/verm jars with burma and amazonian strain cubies and have now made multiple casing of 50/50 verm/"bed-a-beast" with crushed oyster shell and have two cakes one of each strain fruiting straight from cakes. The cakes are in 1 gallon zip lock baggies with damp verm in the bottom for humidification, the bag is opened and air is exchanges about 5 times a day. All my casings are only misted when the surface loses it's desired moister content, and i spray the mycelium and casing layer when i mist. I have 2 large, 2 medium and one 1/2 pint sized casings. The two larger ones have seran wrap over the top secured by rubber bands to preserve humidity and get fanned about 4 times a day.(pictures for those coming soon) One medium casing is in a deep tupper ware container with a bag secured on top for humidity, air exchange 5x/day- the other medium casing is in a shallow black bottomed, clear topped dish. same air exchange. the last casing is in a 1/2 pint jar, same air exchange with a bag secured on top. Does this look like hyphal knots? All casings except the medium black bottomed one have been cold shocked by refridgerating for 24 hours and have been in fruiting conditions for 6 days. No pins, to my knowledge- the temperature is kept around 64'f. Hows it looking?

It's going to grow a little slow with those temps but can work.
You don't want cakes sitting directly on vermiculite or perlite....
Do not cold-shock cubensis.
Best of luck, let us know how it progresses. ~Pixie~

The cakes are on their lids in the bags, and im trying to raise the temp, maybe put them all in a bin with a candle warmer or something. Thanks!

I've placed the casings and two cakes in bags in a large container with light windows built in; There's a candle warmer in there which has raised the temperature to 68'/f- I was curious what the fruiting growth rate will be like at 68' apposed to the recommended 76?

What's your light source?
Can you not find perlite?

My light is coming from the window just above the box, yeah i cant get ahold of any right now, i've got no money but after i get some money in my pocket i plan to hook a ultrasonic humidifier right up to that container and take the plastic off of the casings and cakes, All the cakes apear to have propper humidity judging by water droplets in the containers but what do you think? Will my bag up and plastic cover my casings/cakes provide a proper growing atmosphere?

Go with perlite if you can instead of a humidifier, especially if money is tight. ~Pixie~

all casings are showing promising pin sets- this cake gave me one large specimen that mushroom alone took me on a journey this morning i;ve constructed a baggie chamber for that shallow casing, which is most mature among my casings. the others are coming along well- here are some more pics enjoy! this is my deepest casing so I expect large fruits-

If moneys tight you can recycle plastic food containers, or even pastic takeway containers making them into mini double tubs like this

I havnt tested this yet, waiting on enough colinsied cakes to fill it along with some bulk.
This is a smaller one that is recovering at the moment

All a mini dub tub is to plastic containers that you fit together. You can glue the lids together and cut the middle out so you are left with the part that attaches to the tub and that will hold it together. For air exchange you can go the regular route with 2 holes stuffed with polyfill on the long sides above the subtrate level and 1 on each short side. Same on the top tub. The substrate itself will hold humidity. Generaly you can just leave alone till harvest, but you can always msit and fan once or twice a day to improve things.

I have 1/4 inch holes isntead of a larger hole with polyfill, its still colinising so the holes are taped up with micropore to allow gas exchange.
its pretty much a self sustaining fruiting chamber.

Well, if it is straw, it is wheat straw, and that is what you want(nice golden color), if it is hay, the bails will weigh about 20-40lbs(greenish or brown color), on the other hand straw only weighs about 5-10lbs a bail. A simple search will reveal more straw teks than you could use.

In the two largest casings, i did drill holes in the side (dont have a drill i heated a screw driver on the stove does the same thing :p) Thanks for the replys, yeah i've deffinatly pleased the mushroom spirit, i dont have a good camera to show you with but the pin sets and sampled potency of these mushrooms deffinatly tell me my daily attendance to my mushroom babys have paid off! I'll post more pics of those casing tomorrow!~ Thanks so much -D3
