I've read a few of the debates, but let's put it to a vote.

Rye berries, hands down, if available. Lately, however, I've been stuck using Gourmet Birdseed (basically birdseed without cracked corn added).

Mid west, the price goes up in a few months but it is still about the same price as wbs. I would say I could send you some but I dont know if that would save you any $ after shipping. CH

Probably not I can get from azure farms like I said before for like 60 cents a pound but then like I said after shipping its like 1.60-1.65 a pound.. I like in the great lakes region and the coop here never has it in stock.. There is a health food store but they want 1.99/lb

Are you asking for Rye berries? Winter rye is the same thing and alot of the people at the co-ops don't know. if so try asking for winter rye or cereal rye. CH

Well at the coop just about every grain even long grain brown rice is 1.69.. The coop is more expensive then some of the grocery stores.. I can get a one pound bag of long grain brown rice for .89 cents at kroger.

It looks like WBS will be the winner with twice the votes so far. I have to admit that I like the price and availability.

I think you need to change the poll to show rye berry and not just grain, If more people could find rye at a good price it would beat any thing. In my opinion even if rye costs a little more it is still worth it. JMO, CH

I figured Rye was included in Grains. Also the book Psilocybin Mushroom Handbook states that winter (white) wheat berries are superior to rye as there are less bacterial contaminates.

WBS for now. When I find the hookup on the big bags of rye, I'll switch. WBS is up sharply in price in the last month too- it's birdfeeding season. So it's that much less competitive against rye.

Rye is totally sweet. Very easy to get good moisture content. I always found all of the floaters in WBS to be a pain in the ass. Plus, they sprout
I don't know why everyone stresses over the cost of spawn. For $3 of rye you can make enough spawn for a monotub that will yield you a quarter pound of shrooms.

LONG TIME NO SEE EVERYONE...Doc's WBS tek to leeched horse manure pasteurized then cased 50/50 jiffy/verm = A+...I swear by it and use no other method...I haven't been growing for awhile but now have gotten back into the swing of things. I have upgraded though, before I was using TiT and for some pain in the ass reason couldn't keep my humidity level above 91%, well I have now moved it into an old fridge with no freezer in the top. I am running an ultrasonic humidifier(the kind that comes with the water dish and the cool lights to give the effect of a glowing fog lol) and a cool mist humidifier, along with this comes 99% humidity. I know a lot of people frown upon having the humidifier in with the mushrooms but this seems to be working out so far. I have four B+ WBS cakes in this thing already and I will be doing bulk again next as I do believe I will be able to fit six large trays(estimating). I have missed this community and I will keep everyone updated on the new setup! Anyone need any help just get at me and I will try my best to help in any way possible.
Cool ass lights at night...:D

Four B+ cakes, two of them crumbled on me.

I dunked and rolled the three on the right on the 29th of May and the one on the far left I let colonize a day longer to assure full growth and doesn't have the knotting like the others are showing yet, the temperature hangs at 79 degrees which seems to be about just right. Well I hope you all are feeling as optimistic as I am right now! Oh and does anyone have an old humidity gauge that is worth a damn that they are willing to send me for free? Mine gets to 98% and I have to then take it out and let it dry out before it works again. I have no funds ATM but I would be willing to trade a handful of prints when I harvest these puppies. Get at me!

I had to vote for Other!
mainly because I don't use WBS, Grains or Popcorn as a Substrate I only use those as Spawn!
for Substrates I use Hpoo, Straw, or hardwoods depending on species

I think you are confusing substrate to mean "bulk substrate". You might want to look up substrate and spawn in the dictionary.
