Dehydrator Drying?
    #10409425 - 05/27/09 08:45 PM (3 years, 11 months ago)

Recently I have harvested and dried my first batch of shrooms!!
Now that I have gone through the process I have some questions. My Dehydrator is a Nesco model that you just plug in and it starts up and dehydrates at 150 degrees Fahrenheit. Now I am getting some crazy colors in my stems, a little black, gold, brown, silver, and even green once. They go straight in the dehydrator after harvest. Is this normal? The caps look fine.

Also I am concerned that the dehydrator is killing potency because when me and all my buddies ate an 8th we got nothing more than a body buzz. Now I also started from multi-spore injection so I know that also may be it. I have read post after post and some say 150 F wont hurt them and some say no higher than 95 F or it will damage the potency. What is the general consensus now on drying at 150 degrees Fahrenheit? They do dry really fast about 2 hrs for small mushies, 4 hrs for medium mushies, and about 5-6 hours for the bigger ones(cracker dry). So what do you guys think it is the MS injection or the high dehydrator temps (should i get a dehydrator with a temp control?). Also my FC gets plenty of FAE/fanning and misting, stays at 99% humidity, 12/12 6500k light cycle, and i put a pile of wet verm on my cakes too. So i don't think it could be my growing environment. They really grew great in there! Thanks for all your help, time, and input guys!:bow2::thumbup:

You can set the dehydrator as high as it will go (usually is 150-155) and suffer no noticeable potency lose.

All those colors are probably normal. Bruising and such brings out differences. Not a result of your env. most likely unless they are rotten.

As for potency, its possible they could be degrading a bit. Just keep an eye on them for dryness and you should be fine.

I like to use a fan in the summer with the booms on cardboard.

In the winter I barely even need that. It gets so dry up here in Minnesota.

Is there any straight up answer to this question? What do you TC's out there think? Does dehydrating at 140-150 degrees Fahrenheit degrade the potency of the shrooms. I noticed a post out there right now similar called "Good Grow, Bag High". I noticed RR said that he grills them VERY hot with no noticeable potency loss. But I am sure RR works with very potent cultures. If you see this RR what drying technique do you use? I really dont wanna have to disable the heating element if i dont have too. Thanks for all your input guys!

What temps do you dry at?

120-130ish.
Mine is so cheap it not only lacks a thermostat, it doesn't even have a power switch.

I slice mine up before drying, so they're generally cracker dry in 4-6 hours @ 135f.  I don't know if that helps preserve potency, but 5 minutes chopping to save 12-20 hours of drying works for me.

I have an old school dehydrator. No thermostat, fan or power switch. Just plug it in and your dehydrating. Mine has adjustable vents on top. I just open them all the way. Less than 6 hrs dry. I couldnt tell any potency difference between these and the ones I fan dried for 24+ hrs.

^^^^I do it the same way. If it's small, I leave it, if it's a biggen then I'll slice right up the stem but keeping it one piece. If it's a monster then I chop.

I always atleast chop them in half, even small ones.    The big ones I slice up like its going in a salad.

I just throw them in a mesh bin i have on top of a fan, forget about them for 24 hours, then throw them in a jar i made with desiccant in it. within 6 hours of throwing them in the jar there not even bendable

Do some searching. RR and many other TC's have answered this question REPEATEDLY, including the thread you are talking about. The answer is NO.

When I started I used this dehydrator

It had no power switch, no fan, and no thermostat. I used a small computer fan that I screwed to the bottom shelf to force air flow through it and it cut the drying time in half.

Later I came across this one at a thrift store for 20$ and snagged it

It has a fan and a thermostat that I can set, I tend to set it between 130f and 150f to dry them.

Does anyone know the EXACT temperature that psylocibin/psylocin breaks down/ becomes destroyed at? And do you have links for proof of this? I just want to be sure that I am not going to be destroying my shrooms when I dry them...

Proof = many, many batches dried by many, many cultivators.

I never found any evidence that the magic is degraded at any temp up to the melting point.
Why would it? Lots of molecules are heat-stable.

People make tea or pizza. RR grills fresh shrooms. I've extracted them with boiling ethanol.

Use the dehydrator.

Ok, I'll use it because you said so. But if I eat some shrooms afterwards and don't feel anything I'm going to be upset  :sniper:
