California medical marijuana grower, spiritualist, and activist Eddy Lepp was sentenced Monday to a mandatory minimum 10-year prison sentence on federal marijuana cultivation charges in a case where he grew more than 20,000 pot plants in plain view of a state highway in Northern California's Lake County. US District Court Judge Marilyn Patel also sentenced him to five years probation. He must report to federal authorities by July 6.
Lepp contended that the plants were a medical marijuana grow for members of the Multi Denominational Ministry of Cannabis and Rastafari and legal under California law. But during his trial, he was not allowed to introduce medical marijuana or religious defenses. He was found guilty of conspiracy to possess marijuana with the intent to distribute more than 1,000 pot plants and of cultivating more than 1,000 plants, which carries a maximum life sentence.
According to California NORML (CANORML) and the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat, there were gasps and sobs from Lepp supporters in the courtroom as Patel passed sentence. The sentence was "extreme," Patel conceded, but said her hands were tied by federal law.
In a nod toward the current turmoil over the status of federal prosecutions of medical marijuana providers, Judge Patel said Lepp could apply for a rehearing if the laws changed. Lepp and his attorneys plan to appeal the verdict and the sentence.
Lepp attorney Michael Hall told Patel the sentence was "incredible."
"Incredible is what the law requires," Patel responded, adding that legalizing marijuana appeared to be Lepp's driving passion. "Maybe you want to be a martyr for the cause," she said.
Sentencing Lepp, a 56-year-old veteran in ill health, to prison is a travesty and a waste, said supporters. "This case sadly illustrates the senselessness of federal marijuana laws," said CANORML's Dale Geiringer. "The last thing this country needs is more medical marijuana prisoners. Hopefully, we can change the law and get Eddy out of jail before he completes his sentence."
"Locking up Eddy Lepp serves no purpose and is a huge waste of life and scarce prison space," said Aaron Smith, California policy director of the Marijuana Policy Project. "The community would be a lot better served if we taxed and regulated California's $14 billion marijuana industry rather than continuing to incarcerate nonviolent people like Eddy, who are clearly of no danger to society."

So my dad built a pool for this guy...
I've driven by the property...
He gave my dad this hilarious poster representing his 'farm' and my dad hung it in his office.
It was great stuff 'cause my dad is not into pot at all (but he certainly doesn't believe in locking people up for pot)...
Anyways, that's real unfortunate.

There's no way I'd be "reporting" to any establishment to serve a 10-year sentence for not harming anyone.

he is lucky they only gave 10. I'm surprised they didn't try to make a example of him. i was busted for only having 50 plants in my yard and was facing more time than that. but still the whole thing is senseless, i mean what did the gov really accomplish?

And the bicycle known as the law keeps peddling backwards...yay. I really don't understand this...at all. Why not bust the pharmaceutical companies for distributing marinol on massive scales? Oh wait, that's right...because big pharma is in bed with uncle Sam. I *almost* forgot. They just want to make all the money because they can charge $50 a pill for marinol or whatever the shit costs, which just gets people really high and doesn't treat their symptoms, whereas a natural remedy that is considerably cheaper and probably more effective, remains illegal.
Let's make willow trees illegal, too. The bark from it is a precursor to aspirin. Not to mention the trees are ugly. Let's eradicate them all!!! And if you have a willow on your property, you're going to jail for life, asshole! How dare you trust mother nature over nasty synthetics riddled with side effects! How dare you!!

its been mentioned already that its blasphemy for our country to supply such heavy drugs to such a large variety of people, and then lock someone up for growing a natural (soontobelegal) drug. ( which theyve labelled a narcotic)
and hard evidence of that is the town i grew up in. at the age of twelve i knew what it meant to bang a pill, though ive always been above trying it, its always been around, by 14 the majority of the kids i knew were smoking roxies off of tinfoil (synthetic heroin), which are supplied by pharmacies, usually 200 to a bottle, one being enough to knock someone on their ass, depending on their tolerance.
now what? oc 40s, 80s, theres even 160mg ones, enough to kill a grown man without a tolerance, yet it only the size of half of your pinky nail. this article shows the real worlds, and the priorities of our nation, which while in some aspects other than these may sometimes save lives, but usually they are fueled by an ambition with a longterm goal of gettin that paper.
My point being by the story of my hometown, is that our government, it supplies addiction, then looks down upon the addicts, now they go so far as to suggest legalization to help the economy, but sentence an innocent, earthloving man to what may be his death.

My sister's friend has MS... and she grew just one plant, told my sister and she was going on about how fucking stupid she was.. i was saying the same, don't grow and tell!
Pretty much don't trust friends, she's been friends with her for 8 years? and said that if she ever pissed her off. my sister would call the cops on her tiny little plant... pretty much that gave me a good warning to never tell her anything that she could use against me.
