I went hunting in the woods next to my house today, just to see what's up. I noticed that these seem to popping up alot. The weather has been bouncing back and fourth between cold and rainy and HOT. Here's a brief description:
habitat: Northern Illinois, hardwood forest, fallen tree, stream nearby. Not gregarious.
CAP: umbilicate. 8 inches in diameter. From center, dark brown, to tan, to tan with dark brown patterns, dark brown margin. smooth.
GILLS: decurrent. very small pores. spongey. off white, tan-ish.
STEM: dark brown. solid, not fibrous. about an inch long, 3/4 inch wide. Very rough.
SPORE PRINT: coming soon.
SMELL: overbearing dirty mushroom smell. Leaves behind stench on whatever touched!
TASTE: yeah right!
I've seen this is many different sizes, from 2 inches wide to over a foot wide. All other information stays the same.
I should be able to show pictures within the next 5 days. Please excuse the noobness of this post.
Thanks in advance!

Your welcome, MacklinReed, if your finding a lot of Dryad's saddle in an area, it is usually a good place to look for Morels.

have you ever tried these? There are some that are still in their early stages. Do they taste any good or should I just leave them?

The very young ones taste alright, once the caps start to expand, I don't like the taste.

i ate dryads saddles (sauteed on high heat, fast and furious) for the first time the other day and found them tasty, although i can see how the 'rubbery, slimy' texture could turn some people off. i thought they were quite good. also strung a bunch up in slices to make stock with at some point, very mushroomy mushroom all in all. i am having crap luck finding morels though oh, well

what kind of foods do you recommend putting them in?
I'd love to make a mushroom quesadilla!

maybe too strong for that, unless you rock the jalapenos, IMO best to try everything straight up sauteed first, to get the taste, then, just be creative
