so far i've read stranger in a strange land, starship troopers, and time for the stars, and they've all been great in their own way. what an amazing author.

His books seem permanently infused with old-fashioned values, IMO. A great writer but the personality of his characters tend to start sounding exactly the same after a while.

I dont know... Ive read stranger and starship and wasnt much impressed with either. I appreciate the right wing nationalism in starship, but I just find the novels uninspiring.
Herbert, Clarke and Asimov is where it is at for me.

Who's Herbert?
I similarly must vote for Clarke and Asimov. Bradbury occasionally, but he delves too much into fantasy land for my tastes.

I think I've read everything Heinlein ever wrote. One of the very best SF writers of all time.
Try "The Moon's a Harsh Mistress" next.

I don't know what you mean about order. I also don't know if I can help you at all since you don't like Dune. But the Heinlein to read is Time Enough For Love. If you don't like that I cannot recommend anything. Maybe Samuel Delaney Dahlgren.

You're reading all the wrong ones! Stranger is OK, but I've read most of his books and Starship is easily the weakest.
Best two, imho:
The Door into Summer The Moon is a Harsh Mistress
