I called the hotline today. spoke to this girl and told her that obama needs to legalize marijuana and it simply doesn't make sense to spend bliions of dollars arresting people on a drug more harmless then tobacco and alcohol- she said I have a good point and should feel free to call back anytime. she was also telling me that every call makes a difference and obamas team reviews each call

I don't know who exactly Obama was laughing at, but it was fucking stupid. Lost most my faith in him on that remark.
He gave a straight foward answer, it was quick and to the point. NO. But perhaps such a simple answer wouldn't have been as well tolerated without his extraneous cynicism:
An opinion is an opinion; whether it is written on paper or on the internet, it is an expression of letters that form words, to form ideas, you get the point... There is nothing unique about an "internet idea" that would warrant calling attention to it, or somehow relating it to an actual issue.
Its his equivelent of responding "internet is serious business" something online posters will typically post when they do not wish to address an idea head on. Undermining the medium of expression. Either he is seriously indulging these ideas or not, its that simple. Further, it was his idea to set this interchange up, so there is even more responsibility in that.
I would actually be less cynical if he had the gonads to direct his joke directly at pot smokers, rather than diverting this focus through the internet. Then people would be like hey, hes laughing at our opinion.
No hes just laughing at the internet, its ok.

No, I wouldn't expect or speculate as to how the political mechanism works, but if he would cut the sophistry and address the ideas in a straight forward manner, he might have my support.
