Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE)

I'm thinking about making some extra cash working as a PC tech in the ResNet comp. lab on campus. In order to do so, I have to become certified.
I'm a little confused as to what I should do...
I am considering to take a Maintaining and Supporting Computers (A+ Certification Training) course through my university's extension center. Hopefully then, I could pass the CompTIA A+ Essentials and 220-602 exams and become certified.
Could solely having CompTIA A+ certification enable me to work in a computer lab, or would I have to continue to take exams to become an MCSE?
Any suggestions, help, experience, or expertise are greatly welcomed.
EDIT: I've also like to note that I'm only looking for a part-time PC repair job to help compensate for my weed/booze/dr00gz expenses.

Don't they tell you what certifications you need? I would take the a+ then the net+ certifications first.

The guy I talked to at the ResNet office wasn't very informative. A friend of mine suggested that I get the A+ certification first. Seems like he was right after the obvious overall consensus. Thanks!

You are thinking of computertraining.com, that is a scam.
A+ and Net+ are certification tests created by (COMPTIA) the Computing Technology Industry Association. They are widely recognized certifications.

I got my CCNA and network+ certs, plus I'm a MCP (MICROSHIT CERTIFIED PROFESSIONAL) and I've got people calling me to offer jobs all the time.
It's pretty badass.

How did you study for the ccna? How hard was it? I took some training at my last job. They had a ccna give some classes.

I learned some programming in college, then at most of my jobs I ended up fixing the computers because nobody else could. I got a job at compaq and learned a lot there.
There are plenty of books for all the certifications. I don't know any good websites.

a+ is a simple cert. CCNA on the other hand I've heard is quite hard. You could probably just get a good book and teach yourself enough for a+ cert, i took the practice exam just for fun and scored a 76 or so...it was the one on compTIA site...just didnt' know anything about IRQ port assignments, and I've never taken a class for it, i do however had a degree in CS, but most stuff on there is pretty easy...
HELLA, don't you have to re-certify every 3 years to keep your CCNA? I would like to get it, but that doesn't sound worth it since I already have a good job, but they give me education assistance, so i can get it for free...

I actually found CCNA to be much easier to be honest. The A+ exam was full of very off the wall questions, that IMO don't have much to do with anything. CCNA is straight forward, if you know your shit you know your shit, and its all basic networking + some proprietary os stuff.
Anyways, my cert is expired so im not sure I'm one to talk, but CCNA isnt very hard if you are somewhatfamiliar with a command prompt and networking. i.e: supra you will have no problem

If you need prep materials for a+, n+ or mcse, hit me up. I have and mcse+s, a+, n+, and a ccna, and have been working as a sysadmin for 4 years now. the compTIA certs were mad easy, and don't really teach you much, but if you know your shit than you can bullshit the a+ and n+ rather easily. The ccna and mcse required (sort of) memorizing a ton of stuff, if you take a ton of practice tests the week before the test, you will be fine. braindumps are your friend, the more familiar with the test questions, the better off you will be.

a+ is a cinch, just buy a book and teach yourself, no class needed. MCSE is not required for the type of work you would be doing. Experience will speak greater than any cert tho, do you have any previous repair experience?

But it doesn't matter what the consensus is on some online forums for this job. It matters what their requirement are. If the guy you talked to was a tool, why not call back and get someone helpful so you can know what you actually have to do before possibly wasting money + time on the wrong test? Although A+ is an entry-level cert, who knows there are tons of certs out there and the guy could even be referring to some internal procedure.
